Trade my 2016 for a 2023? Am I dumb?

they got rid of one of the storage compartments for some reason. 2023 also has all the annoying safety sense stuff that i cant stand. thing is yelling at me all winter because of snow on the sensors. my buddy has an identical 2017 access cab and its the better truck. in my opinion anyways just because its that much simpler. the added new tech doesn't make anything "better"

Keep what you have, no need to spend money on the same truck just newer. Do the wrap, or not, make the changes you want, and be happy with what you have. I have a '16 as well, and think about trading sometimes also. But, I love my truck, been trouble free, I've added some mods and have more to do. I'll trade/ sell it one day, but it'll be for a Tundra. Like you, I'm older, getting in and out of the Tacoma isn't as easy as it used to be.

I would weigh the numbers. Trade in $, New price. Keeping old, plus wrap and other things it may need in near future. Like mentioned a wrap is gonna cost you $3k to $5k. Plus whatever a 90k mileage vehicle is gonna need.

I traded a paid off Super White 2016 SR5 with 99K miles for a 2023 MGM OR and do not regret it. The trade value covered over half the purchase cost of the new OR. I had the peeling paint issue on both fenders and drivers side rear door of the 2016. I did not want to spend the next 10 years chasing paint repairs.

Here is a list of what I gained with the 2023:

No paint repair needed (yes, I have seen the occasional thread about clear coat issues on MGM)
    Power driver's seat
    Dual Zone Climate Control
    Adaptive Cruise Control
    LED Headlights
    Android Auto/Apple Carplay
    Bed Outlet
    Power Rear Window
    Warranty
Less chance of the Timing Cover leak (seems to be more prevalent in early models)

Adding up the cost of a repaint, installing a power seat, adding OEM LED headlights, new head unit, power rear window, bed outlet and extended warranty would have put a serious dent in the amount I would have "saved" by keeping a paid off truck.

I use the items in the list so it was well worth the trade for me. I was able to finance the balance for 4 years at 3.49% taking advantage of a promotion at the time of purchase. It all comes down to what you are comfortable with financially.

My 2020 truck has been good, especially after turning off all the nanny bs. That stuff can drive you crazy. Truck would be perfect without that crap.

Staying with what you have, and putting some money into it to create some new-ness is the “right” thing to do. You know what you have and it’s pretty damn good.

On the other hand, as pointed out, 2023 is the final opportunity to get a new version of the last iconic Toyota NA V6. It’s a truck you already know like the back of your hand, refined over 8 years, complete with new features, fresh warranty, and odometer rolled back to zero.

Your financial situation is yours personally to sort out, so point is, either way, you’ll have the best truck out there, win-win. Good luck!

Keep the 2016. 2023 will have all that nanny tech crap and if your 2016 isn't leaking from one of the million known locations on that 2GR-FKS...it means it solid.

2023 will be a gamble for the same truck

    Dumb idea

I can’t wait for the post in five years that causally mentions the five rolls of metallic figeater scarab green wrap he’s had sitting next to it since September ‘23. READY.

Random aside, how come no one wants my free OEM gas tank guard that I got years ago and never installed?!

    My vote is no.

No financial reason to do so, the 23's are as expensive as the 24's are, so you are not saving money on the "old" style.

There is practically zero functional difference between yours and the 23's. A few minor features and that's it, if your seat is comfortable and you can live without carplay then there is no actual improvement. I like the safety sense features but I wouldn't be trading up just for those.

Give the new Tacoma a year to settle out, then buy a 25. Its Toyota, there won't be issues so I wouldn't worry about the turbo 4 vs the NA 6. That said, if the rumors of peak torque being at 1600 on the new turbo 4 that thing is going to be awesome. I'm driving a turbo I6 now and I forgot what low end and mid-range torque is like, it is SOOO nice not having to rev the piss out of the motor just to get any reasonable acceleration out of it. Apples to oranges but my I6 is nicer as a daily than my old 6.0L V8 in my G8, I expect the Turbo I4 will be the same.

If you are dropping that kind of money why not make it an actual upgrade, spending $50k just to have the same thing is not worth it IMO.

BTW, I second the comment of a detailing. Get the inside and outside done, and don't be cheap about it. $400 there will make it feel like a new truck, no kidding.

Only you know your financial situation obviously. If you want a new truck/car and you can easily afford one, I say go ahead. As for getting a 3rd Gen - I was in a similar situation. I was going to keep my Tacoma (purchased new in 2019) - it was a color I grew to love (Cav Blue) and it looked and ran just like it did when I drove it off the lot.

I had just under 250K trouble free miles and many of those in 4WD. The size of the truck is perfect - we do have other vehicles, but we have a horse farm and the Tacoma is able to maneuver around on our trails wonderfully. However I was concerned that with the new Toyota 4th Gen Tacoma getting a new engine/transmission, that if I started having issues with my truck I'd be in a pickle. Toyota may well hit the nail on the head with the 4th get, but for me the 3rd Gen has been flawless and great for my needs. I traded my Tacoma for a new 23 Pro. I like that there is no getting used to a new vehicle..but I'm old. Good luck.

I am very happy with my 2016 and plan on putting many more miles on it. That being said, life is too short. Always get what you want and can afford.

If you want it and laying out the cash won’t hurt your plans for now or the future then go for it. It doesn’t have to make sense if it’s what you want. It’s just money, you can’t do anything with it once you’re dead. Even if your plan was to keep the 2016 til it died you’re just pushing that date another seven years and 90k miles out into the future by buying a 2023.

A lot of people are saying it doesn't make sense but to get something new, with no miles, and a new warranty makes a lot of sense if your situation allows you to do so. And if you do plan on selling it down the line, getting something newer will have less depreciation. So although the truck is virtually the same, there are a lot of benefits if you are thinking down the line. I have traded in my wife's 4runner every two years and it has only cost me a few thousand each time. We drive over 30,000 miles a year so it made sense to us.

I would keep what you have. I plan to keep my '18 until 2030 at least. By then maybe we'll have autonomous, electric, VTOLs or something. :notsure:

Maybe check first to see if you can find the truck first?
AC are few and far, so is your color choice, 2WD’s don’t seem common either.

You make a fair point. I saw another white access cab in the wild the other and actually commented that someone must have stolen my truck because I've never seen anything like it. I would have to order it and I don't even know if toyota is still taking orders on 23s.
