Holy shit, I was thinking of resurfacing my deck in Trex, but now I think the wood is just fine, it's just a little dirty and worn. $65000 is crazy money.

It's pretty big and is second story but still, I about fell over when he told me the price.

I think my deck is only 12'x20'-25', so not terrible, and I'd only be replacing the tread boards since the uprights and all still seem sturdy. He probably also used the nicest Trex you can get for that money, I'd just not want to have to get splinters in my toes

After the link was posted to Lowe's Deck building software online yesterday I spent a little bit of time playing around. For a modest two level deck with all Trex or similar decking the price was $14K. Switch that to PT wood and the price went down to a little over $6K, $7.5K for cedar. But that included all the "stuff" that Lowe's thought I would need. I could save $500 if I did away with the joist hangers. Putting a 2x4 under the joists on the ledger will work just fine for a lot less than $500. I might use Trex for the top of the railings and for the edge of the deck for aesthetics and cost savings. My final design is not complete but I like the idea of a two tiered deck with the second tier at about the height that would be comfortable for people to sit on. If I ever entertained with a larger amount of people the extra built in stealth seating would be nice. Especially if I kept some throw cushions that could be placed to make sitting more comfortable.

What was the outside dimension of the one you were messing with? I haven't got to draw ours on there yet, I'm thinking somewhere around 12' X 20'-30' without putting the tape on it yet.

I didn't pay close attention since I knew that I would need to take some measurements at home to really dive into estimating actual costs for my own deck project. But I think it was 18 feet wide and about 16 feet long. It was a default program so it might go right back to the same dimensions if I pull it up again. Let me give it a shot and I will report back. I don't have to bill my hours at work to anyone so who will know? Plus the boss and her boss are both out today!:bananadance:

Niece made it home at 1:30 this morning. They had to be up at 5:00 am yesterday to get her friend to the airport then pack up the campground and head out.

Not sure what time they left Louisville but credit where credit is due, that was a 1,250 mile drive yesterday.

Lowe's automatically saved the "project" I was working on yesterday so it is easy enough. If I registered with Lowe's I could just save it for future reference!
