I've casually rode a motorcycle 6 days a week with antique tags, and not gotten any heat. I don't think its a problem

Hey folks, we are itching to do some camping this weekend. Anyone know anywhere with good primitive truck camping near NOVA?

I searched the thread and didn't find much with specifics

That's a horrible idea. What time?
Flagpole Knob is a popular destination. There is a fair amount of sites near the top along all three routes. George Washington National Forest website may provide some additional info on sites as well. Sleepy Creek in WV. Big Levels 4x4 Trail in VA, but I'd use caution on that with all the rain we've had. That one is a truck killer.

Be prepared for no cell service if you do the VA stuff. Not sure about Sleepy Creek coverage.

The weather seems great for it too. Cool at night, warm during the day. Hopefully not too popular either.

Thank you! Much appreciated My truck is well-built, so I don't mind a rough trail but if I'm going alone I don't want to do too much where I might get in a pickle. I'll definitely look into all of these, but will likely avoid Big Levels for now.

Big Levels would most likely require tractor wheels or pontoons right now.

To Flagpole, Union Springs Road would be the hardest trail, followed by Dunkle Hollow from Switzer Lake. There was a river crossing being repaired a week or two ago on that route, so check on that with the forest service. 3rd route is basically 2WD from the Reddish Knob side.

Let me know when you head out. If I'm able maybe I'll run up with you. Truck hasn't been dirty in a while.

Yeah we are currently leaning towards dispersed camping in the Rapidan WMA, since it's only a couple hours away from NOVA. I definitely want to take a run up Flagpole or Taskers Gap with y'all soon though. The truck needs some fresh damage.

Not to get too heavy here, but this interview is new. It is with the two pilots who went airborne without weapons on 9/11. While I was trying to re-enlist, they were taking off on what may have been a one way trip. Worth looking at.

Saw a Ford Lightning on the way home last night. Now I know the "F" means Fugly.

I want to say @Hafaday posted a link the other day that showed the dunkle hollow route is closed for a bit while they do some sort of construction near the reservoir.

    edit: it was him https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/gwj/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD1138233

looks like it's technically on switzer lake road but it's the same road all the way up, just different names on half of the road haha

Couple of my friends and I are hitting Flagpole Oct 14-15. Welcome to join along. Kids/wife/doggo friendly

Flagpole is about 2 hours from NOVA.
I also like to go to Wolf's Gap in Woodstock - about an hour away from NOVA. Theres also a trail. Pretty easy, but might get some pinstripes. I havent been in a year or so.. I can get you coordinates if you want (I like gatekeeping, so shoot me a PM). At the top of the mountain, is a very secluded hunter's campground.

Sleepy Creek doesnt have cell coverage, at least for AT&T. Also, not free.. I think its $10.

My motorcycle GPS has a bunch of gpx files that Ive saved, and I have a few other pins dropped in google maps that Id like to revisit. LMK if anyone wants to go explore. I havent been camping in a year, so definitely itching to go out.

Thanks! Will do. I think we will give a WMA a shot this weekend, but we hope to camp regularly throughout fall, winter, and spring

    You are correct.

Another good one we used to go to is Green Ridge State Forest in MD. That one has some pretty good sites. You do have to pay but it's not bad.
