First time off road with the '23

 

New Mexico got lots of cool places - I want to check out Chaco Canyon.

 

That place is truly amazing. If you get a chance check out Mesa Verde as well.

Some of the best food I’ve ever had was in Albuquerque.

I’ve lived in Santa Fe over 20 years and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the USA. I love NM!!!!!

 

I drove across the top of NM, I-40, for my scouting mission to PHX. Flat, desert, fewer windmills than OK and North Texas. First few miles coming in from the east would make you think it was un-peopled. Then you get to ABQ ...and that altitude drop through ABQ. I traveled thorough southern NM for the final move because it was early January and the "leave freeway at next exit if light flashing" suggested snow/ice might be an issue. But I was zoning (no Cruise control on the UHaul) so remember little.

Apparently there is "blue hole" diving in the middle of the desert near Santa Rosa.

On our list. Just recently got back from Monument Valley that was going to be a jumping off point to other locations but plans got foiled.

Gave us a good field-test of some new gear ( Dometic / Jackery / Clam-Quickset / Moonshade awning ) that makes getting outdoors much
easier than some of our other quality, but cumbersome gear. I think Joshua Tree will be on the short-list as temps start to get reasonable.

This thread is making me want to visit this place more and more.

 

I drove through NM twice. Not knocking it, but it is dirt and rocks. Have you guys ever been to a place like WV or Maine? Green, forever green.
Where I used to ride bikes in WV.

Desert or not. Both places have their attraction.

 

Bisti is amazing! Like walking around on another planet.

 

Even AZ is not all desert. In fact, there is a "high, trees, winter happens" in the north and "desert, barren" in the south. Separated by the "Mogollon Rim", a ledge running east-west and marks a change from 2000 ft south into 7000-8000 ft in the north. Those who want seasons can live in Payson or Prescott south base of the rim) or Flagstaff (cold, snowy in winter) on the plateau.

"West" is not all desert.

I lived in Ohio for years, NC for a bit. Got tired of winter and wanted open spaces.
