Has anyone heard a reason why the back window is now so small?

Asking the same question. In addition to a wide C pillar there is a wide trim piece around the rear window. No idea what they were shooting for.

Overall I sense more form than function in many of the 4th gen design elements.

I'm assuming it's because IIHS moderate offset crash test now includes a child/small woman dummy behind the driver. The wider C-pillar gives some extra "ooomph" to save your kid. Not a bad thing.

It’s not actually pillar. It’s part of the door.

The pillar doesn't stop where the edge of the door meets it, the back of the door covers about 3/5 of the C pillar. From the inside there isn't that much area without window coverage

What about the B pillar then?

I think the rear window is short due to the door handle mechanism being right below it. Rear window has to be narrower to be able to go down. You can see it in the side profile shot.

Toyota taking a page form early 80's GM I guess.

Explain how the front window can roll down then if that is why they had to do it.

I think a big reason is to keep the styling consistently themed across the double cab and xtracab (Which pulls inspiration from older Tacomas)

Same styling as the double cab^

I agree. I think it’s all about some weird design style they were looking for. Almost like a mini version of the Ram mega cab.

    Clearly magic.

There has to be some reason the rear door/window/C pillar looks like trash, what it is, I do not know.

As for the styling aspect matching, that's fine and all, but there are no seats in the XC. In the DC, the rear passengers are greeted with this:

Good thought, although the IIHS criticized the current Taco b/c the rear passenger dummies were at an increased risk of striking the front seat backs. With IsoDynamic, engineers added what appears to be an additional 4 inches of depth behind the front seats within an already cramped rear seat space, in order to accommodate shock absorbers. That would seem counterintuitive, in light of the IIHS’s results.

Reminds me of the good ole days when I was growing up in the backseat of my 1st gen. Eating my knees and having a small window to look out of next to the large C pillar:

If some future kid is lucky enough to have their parents buy the Pro, they too can share this experience.

Pretty cool that they put a smoke detector on the headliner.
