I have a 2011 tacoma and have one or more tpms sensors broken or bad battery, that is alerting.
I do not care to have tpms sensors on normal 4 tires, but I would like to have tpms spare tire only.
My spare tire is orig but I would like to replace spare tire and put a new tpms in it.
I read that 2011 do not come with spare tire tpms ?
I would like the four normal tire tpms sensors removed from list and only have new spare tire tpms being monitored. This way I can tell easily if my new spare tire/tpms has pressure or not.
    regards
    Mike

I’m 99% sure your spare has no tpms. Look to see if it has a rubber valve stem or a solid metal one like the road rims have. My 2010 doesn’t have a spare tpms. Removing the 4 tpms’ will make the light stay on and fail a safety inspection if your state has that. They will also check for a working bulb if you pull that.

if I add a tpms to my spare will it still read it ? Is there a receive sensor near each wheel or 1 central reader ?
If there is only one sensor in the list, will it keep the light off ? I do want light to light if spare is flat.

You have to have 4 working sensors to keep the light off, that's how the system is designed. No way to change that.

It may be possible to add a 5th sensor for the spare if the system supports 5 sensors but I'm not sure, earlier 2nd gens supported 5 sensors but I don't think later ones do.

    thxs for replies.
Its funny that a flat tire will not leave you stranded by the roadside, but a flat spare will def strand you.
I think tpms was only to save fuel by having proper air pressure ?

It’s called give your spare tire a kick once a month to see if it has air pressure

That and safety, you would be suprised the amount of vehicles we get in the shop with severely underinflated tires.
Most people just ignore the light anyway.

Not sure if it helps at all but I'm pretty sure I remember my 2013 sport having a TPMS in the spare but I've since disabled the light completely.

I don't think its really needed though, I drop my spare in the fall every year when it gets undercoated and I check the pressure and overinflate it to like 35 maybe 40 psi. If I ever need to use it I'll be checking the pressure and let out as needed, and I always have an electric pump and hand pump in the truck if need be.

They quit the spare sensor back in 2009. As far as i know if the truck wasn't set up for it in the first place you can't just add one and expect it to magically work. Unfortunately my 07 has the spare sensor. In the winter when the 4 tires heat up while driving the spare stays cold... just enough psi difference to set of the @$&^$#$ tpms light. Save yourself the grief and just check the spare pressure once in a while with a pressure gauge.

Are there a tpms receivers by each wheel or is there only one somewhere ?

No just a single antenna built into the TPMS ECU, it's location varies depending on year model.
Look like on 11 it's below the ac control panel.

The simple way to get around the problem is to inflate the spare to the max pressure that is shown on tire. That way you don't have to worry about the spare's pressure very much. I usually check only 2x per year and find that the spare is always above minimum pressure. No TPMS fooling around needed!

my friend bought an aftermarket kit to monitor his tire pressure on his bassboat trailer. i bet you can use the same system, for just the spare.

i like it on my spare. my 2006 has it. i have the best intentions to check PSI all the time, and even hang the spare with the air valve facing down..but i always forget. i still need to flip the spare on the 2023. but i know me..i will forget.

There's one sensor in each wheel. It's possible to mount all 4 sensors inside the spare with bands. Bands were one method to mount TPMS sensors in the early 2000s. I don't know if most tire shops can still do it today.

Sensor battery life is about 7 years on average. If your existing sensors are original, they're on borrowed time and should not be moved to the spare. To accomplish what you want, you can purchase 4 new sensors at a cost of $200-300 and have them mounted in the spare, then have the shop program the sensor IDs into the ECU.

1.if you buy 4 new sensors and put 3 in pvc tube and one in the spare tire work ?

    2. If you overpay and buy 4 new sensors from a tire store they will have the tool to
delete old sensors and add four new ones to computer list ?

    3. Do the shop tools input expected psi or does it have to learn/read it after install?

    4. I am hoping to buy new sensors and update truck computer list in 1 store visit,
then go home and build pvc housing and air it up and be done..

this makes no sense....you want to disable it on the tires your DRIVING on....and enable it on your spare. Is it Friday? Just check the tire pressure....or jump through a million hoops to make it not work but only for the spare...

If your not able to check your spare pressure with a gauge because your spare is mounted valve stem up they make valve stem extensions... would make it easy to check a couple times a year without removing the tire.

i am retired and do not want to climb underneath to regularly check spare air ?
When i walk up to my truck I always look at my tires to make sure they are not flat.
My 2011 sensors are aging and batteries are starting to fail.
I do not want to pay to have tires remounted when tpms break or batteries die.
I drove for 40 years mostly without tpms, but like it to check spare air that I norm do not look at.

I hear ya. Once the batteries died out on my 07 i just checked the pressure with a gauge for the next 6 years and lived with the light on the dash. Just replaced the tires/wheels and decided to go with all new sensors... but this time around i put the spare in the bed... makes it a lot easier to check.
