Any difference between 2nd and 3rd gen OEM suspension?

I just bought a used 2015 that needs some new shocks and probably the coils too. Found a decent deal on the entire setup from someone that took the Bilstein 4600s and coils (assembled) off of their 2022. Will these work on my second gen? My search shows that some say 2005 - 2023 and others that specify between the 2nd and 3rd gen years. Here's the ad for the setup:

 

The coil spring assembly will work.
The springs on the 3rd Gen are stiffer, which will result in a 1/2”-1” lift in the front on a 2nd Gen.

 

Thanks. My truck currently has a spacer on the top of the coils to level the front. Should this be removed due to the stiffer springs?

 

That spacer is probably for the taco lean I would be assuming so I would just leave it there and install your new suspension

 

Looks to be the same size spacer on both sides. Would that be to address the lean?

I'll be putting my go fast camper on this truck and my bed drawer build so it will have a consistent 300 lbs minus the camping gear and water, so the back end will likely be sagging.

I don’t think those are aftermarket spaces but the taco lean you would only have to lift up one side so I wouldn’t worry about that right now and just install your third GEN suspension and let’s see how it looks

 

Ditch the spacers, take the full take offs and slap em in and tighten lower shock, uca main bolt, and lca to frame bolts at ride height.

If you feel the need to simply use the 3rd gen coils (for the lift) and 5100's up front, get the 3rd gen 5100 part number for proper extended and collapsed lengths as well as finer adjustments for lean / ride height.

Put some air bags in the back and call it good.

 

I would also get the truck weighed now and after to see what the actual weight is. Surprisingly wood drawer builds and campers all seem to add more than the paper weights.

 

I was just going to use the 3rd gen coils because they're already assembled and I can get the kit in the link for $500. Wasn't necessarily seeking out the third gen coils in particular.

 

FYI, do some shopping. Got litereally exactly what you linked to (fully assembled 3rd gen TRD OR coils n shocks, rear shocks, u bolts, and UCA's off a 2023 with under 2k miles on them) for 200$ . I wanted to go 5100's and sold off just the shocks for 150$

 

Agreed. $500 is WAY, WAY too much for those shocks. I got mine, with everything included in that add, plus a set of stock leaf springs all for $150.

If you put them in as-is then you'll end up with ~3/4" lift above stock 2nd gen suspension. Your second gen suspension definitely has a spacer in there but it looks to be a preload spacer rather than a typical top hat spacer. Since it's a preload spacer I'm not really sure how much extra height it's giving you so it's uncertain whether the 3rd gen shocks will yield a lift or lower from where you're at now. I had the 3rd gen suspension on my 2nd gen for a while and it was a great starter setup before I moved up to something better. I added a 3/8" top hat spacer to mine in order to achieve a total of 1.5" lift over stock. Spacers get a lot of flak, partly for good reason, but they're not all bad. Using small ones, to tune ride height, shouldn't cause adverse effects. It's really when you start using large ones to achieve larger amounts of lift that you really run into problems.

 

Where you guys shopping? A Google search yields nothing cheaper than $750 that I can find. And nothing cheaper on Ebay.

Thanks for that link and the info. What did you add to the back end for the lift? Extra leafs? Air bags?

 

It had a 1” block in the rear when I bought it so I left that in. But then upgraded to a new OEM leaf pack with Headstrong AAL w/ overload leaf left in.

 

You got seriously lucky. $150 for a complete set of take-offs is not normal. Average cost just for shock take-offs is $200. I would say that for a complete front coilover, avg price I've seen is $400.

OEM bilsteins are not 4600s.

 

$400 is fair. not 3rd gen but I sold my 2nd gen setup. shocks, coils, leafs, UCA and toss in the old factory skid for i think $200 or $250. Might have been less but it was a good deal for someone that needed a refresh.

 

Maybe things have changed. I got a deal, yeah, but only by about $50-100. When I was looking these were all over the place and cheap. Tons of guys around here pulling their stock stuff off, putting on $5k Kings and giving away their stock stuff for pennies.

 

Agreed with the masses. 500$+ is waaaaay to much. Regularly see full sets for sub 350$ and I live in an area where things are ridiculously over priced.
