The running joke is that the NRO orders in the fog for their launches. But seriously, Vandenberg has it's own climate. Fog is notoriously thick on South Base

Even without the fog you don't get to see the pad. You're a few miles away and there is a mountain between you and the pad. This is where I saw my first launch. At night you see a very bright light on the other side of the mountain, then it creates the mountain and lights up EVERYTHING. And sets off every car alarm for miles. Still awesome, but I wish we could see the pad.

 

Apparently, the animation was changed to be more in line with a slightly longer throttle up time for the Ship's engines before the separation clamps are released.

 

I wouldn't put it past the NRO to order up some fog. What with all the weather control tech they have...

The SpaceX streams show the pad, but it's not the same as direct line of sight like KSC.

 

I actually work launch support and we are about 2 miles from SLC-4 and have direct line of sight. Here is my view day of launch. Sonic boom is pretty impressive on flybacks.

Early in my military career (1986) we were "Volunteered" to march in a 4th of July parade in Pensacola, as we were marching it just happened the 747 flew by with the shuttle on it's way back to the cape, they flew lower across Pensacola I guess to give the event some cred. It really put the day in perspective and gave me a whole new outlook on why I was there, plus it was really cool to see.
