Is there a way to test the oil cooler?

I did my belts 4/19, however am getting odd noises, rough idle, smelling a little coolant.

Took the accessory belts off to eliminate potential noise sources. Getting a whine through the fan bearing bracket, Oil cooler & strongest through the filter.

Also a rattle from the fan bracket area & water pump.

More of a rumble at water pump level.

Not overheating. I do have some small mysterious oil leaks. No oil temp or pressure gauge. Just idiot light.

 

You can take it off and pressurize it..

 

Coolant flows from the water pump to the cooler.
Never seen one fail. You can disconnect the hoses and and see if water flows through it, I guess?
But I highly doubt the cooler is “bad”.

 

Where you smell coolant...like its burning it?

 

Up front, just smells like coolant. I get a whiff of it & I’m not used to smelling it.

I guess I’m veering away from the oil cooler & back to water pump, belt tensioner, somewhere in there. It’s just I had thought maybe something to do with the oil cooler since it’s related to the water pump & coolant & it wasn’t all that long ago that the belts & pump were done.

Oh, & I did get a decent kit that was recommend on here.

It’s definitely a bearing, use an automotive stethoscope should be easy to find it

 

I’ve tried on pulleys nuts, but I get bounced off them. & I’ll have to go at these more sideways. Any tips?

 

Possible the fan bracket pulley if you cant find a definite sound with stethoscope

 

Or you can remove one belt at a time and see if the sound disappears, then you know it’s a pulley on the belt that’s removed

 

I replaced that in the spring. Asin. It was looking a little wobbly to me & now looks smooth. I do hear the rattle there, however it’s hard to tell if it’s reverberating.

 

All the accessory belts are removed.

Have u removed the timing cover plastic cover to look at those timing bearings? And idler

 

Sounds like it’s inside the timing cover.

 

yes. That 2nd vid is with the timing cover pulled back. Mainly what you’re hearing are from those bearings.

 

When was the last timing belt and bearings replaced

I understand u said belts, I’m not talking about the 3 belts up front, im talking about timing belt AND bearing and idler bearing and water pump behind the timing cover in April?
I understand you replaced the 3 belts up front.

if all 3 belts are off and making noise it’s probably one of these bearings
