Anything welding

Got a little bit of slag on the backside but it's too late in the day to mess with it so it's still on there

Wiped the top with acetone and thought I'd assess the layout



What I didn't mention is after the first 4 or 5 holes were cut out, I noticed I probably zeroed my z axis way too high (as I had swapped out my nozzle before cutting)

What I mean is, on initial height sensing, the torch would come down but stop as if hitting an invisible "bump" (without ever touching the workpiece surface), springback and then proceed to cut

I say this because I have for every file my cut height set to .0545 programmed which brings my torch to .060 actual



What was actually happening was that the torch was cutting at closer to half an inch above the material surface

After seeing the holes come out just fine, I ran with it since I didn't want to ruin clean steel

There's always a tiny bit of beveling though with plasma anyway, it'll never be as accurate as laser



I'll call it "good enough"



Holes have never been an issue for me, I'm just worried about the small rectangular cutouts



If I have to file them out a big then no biggie

I've read about people needing to hand ream holes on their fab tables that were bought brand new; I'd be beyond pissed if I had to do that on something "laser cut"

 

I love building stuff and been a welder in almost every industry. Actually swapped to quality control to save my body so all I do is read prints and check fit ups and stuff now…. And nothing annoys me more than car stuff since nothing is ever square or level with these things roof rack almost all mocked up. Gotta finish off the back section and add some supports and expanded metal for the floor then comes the super fun mounts to make that are gonna suck too

What bender you using? And how thick is that tube, and diameter?

 

1” , 14 gauge soooo .083” I believe, and I boujeed out on a sweet little bender from MB tools. Im still figuring it out with the whole reference point and nailing bends. Thankfully I can just cut and splice 90’s, 45’s, whatever I decide to bend because it’s a roof rack. But im pretty stoked to know the endless possibilities once I figure it out consistently. also have a JD2 M32 but like how small this dude is for smaller tubing.

It bends really decent actually. I’m impressed. You need a cheater bar for sure but once the bend is started it goes smooth. I have been wanting to build roof racks for some years but needed a way to get off angles and this fit the need. $500 all said and done basically. $200 and some change for the tool and the die was $250 I believe. Worth it so far without a doubt plus being able to stand out and do custom designs that others can is well worth it.

 

The small issue I had when I cut that table out yesterday?

I quickly saw my Z axis was binding...never done that before but that explains why during initial height sensing it never touched the work piece.

Knocked these out after ensuring Z was good; now the only problem is I'll need to grind down a few tabs -



No biggie because for the remaining 7 slats, I'll be making the tabs slightly smaller to fall in place.

Going to test the tab size on some scrap as a "partial" before going to cut the real thing -

BTW, if you didn't use patterning in F360, or are like me and have only used it a little, check out DonPs video (3rd one down). He really shows some neat techniques on using patterning in a very short video.

I used patterning via Firecontrol for bottle openers, but none on Fusion.

On my phone atm but I'll look it up later on PC; is it where you create one entity and it just duplicates itself at specific distance X and Y, or around a circle like a clock?

If so, I've done that when I learned Draftsight. I'll need to learn it again for Fusion so if that's it, thanks for the link!

 

That's the gist of it, but he shows some really quick techniques like how to pattern in more than one angle at a time by drawing lines and patterning off those. It's about 7 minutes and definitely worth a watch.

 

Our CAD instructor, was an engineer by trade (retired 30 years) and so what we'd do is learn a period of instruction, then on a large monitor he put something up we had to mimic using the techniques we learned.

Had to be exact dimensions, angle, everything because if you followed the instruction learned, you'd get the exact same result.

Was very helpful actually.

What is needed to weld 304 on a very standard mig setup. I have a PW mig 180 with 75/25.

Is fluxcore the way to go? I am looking to do an exhaust reroute and probably make a heat shield out of 304. Not looking for perfect results either.

Way I'd do it?

TIG, but can't do that on the 180 so you'll want trimix or 98/2.

 

Have you tried fluxcore stainless wire? Id like to avoid getting another bottle.

Fuck it I should just get a tig setup.

 

Just cause I can, I avoid flux. I'd rather run stick over flux, but ideally would TIG if I had choices.

Only time I run flux if it's dual shielded on mild.

Will have to grind down the tabs a bit on the plasma cut stuff, or just toss it, revise the tab widths, and cut another set out with loose tolerances
