is this dependent on which rack you have? i have a 1up super duty single with a 2 inch hitch. i can take the bike tray part off and attach it to some cross bars? i know i can add a tray to it, but didnt know i could turn it into a roof rack.

My 1up has the split trays so I couldn't do it, but if you buy the pieces separately, then you can pull it off.

Maybe a retractable bed cover, like the retrax models would work. I think those lock in any position? I have a 6' bed, and a tri-fold cover, it wont clear the rear tire with the last panel (closest to the cab) still closed. Gotta drive with the cover fully opened.

I used to have the ReTrax cover and the T2 tailgate pad. You could close it most of the way, but not all the way to the lock. Technically you could lock it up, but it was behind the locking pin, so with a little force you could still open it. Just had some extra friction. If you look up how their lock works you can see what I mean. It would still looked closed/locked.

Thank you all for the info and insight. My truck has a cover and that aluminum divider in the bed. Sucks removing it.

Yeah the retractable type is probably your best option. I have a rollup and it does not work/lock down with the tailgate pad installed.

My inexpensive soft roll-up Tyger brand tonneau works fine with my Dakine pad. It’s possible to close and latch the tonneau with the tailgate up, and pad on, but it takes a little finesse. It’s very easy to shut the tailgate when the tonneau is closed and latched, so I often just pop the tailgate open an inch or two, close the tonneau, and then close the tailgate. Been using it for several years with no ill effects.

Depends on what you start with. If you start with the roof rack, you can make it a hitch rack but if you start with the hitch rack you can't make it a roof rack.

The tray on the roof rack is a single piece and the hitch rack is two pieces.

I was excited when I first saw this also because I need a roof rack when pulling the camper with the Subaru. But I have the hitch rack so no joy in the end.

Exactly as @s4nsc said, you cannot start with a hitch rack. They also don't sell what I have as a set, the only way to get it is to order the items separately. I had the stuff in my cart, but before I ordered I called and made sure. Lot of money to be wrong about.

I do kinda want their recon rack as well, my brother bought one from the blemished section for like $800 and it's the best thing ever for hauling bikes, when not on roof, and storing bikes. He made a stand for the rack with some old spare tube he had, I can't remember, but I believe he's added casters to it now..

PSA- If you have a dub crankset with the stock SRAM bottom bracket, replace your bottom bracket with something better as soon as your bb starts creaking. If you replace it with the stock bb, the creak will return (mine starts 2 months or so after replacement). My theory is that the plastic dust cap, that also acts like a spacer between the bearing and the spindle, is the culprit. There is also a thin blue o-ring that contacts the spindle. In my opinion, the spindle should only contact the bearing surface (steel on steel) and not plastic (steel on plastic) in a high torque area. See the difference between stock and Wheels Mfg bottom brackets below. While you have the crankset off, also replace the preload ring with a titanium or steel unit. I replaced mine with a Cane Creek ring. The stock plastic preload ring is prone to cracking or the lock ring stripping.

That sounds very full squish discriminatory. ;)

I'll ride the full squish, just on harder trails than the one pictured above. ;)

My new bike I just finished recently. Well just the frame is new. I took everything off my NukeProof Scout and put on a Surly Karate Monkey frame. I wanted a more utilitarian bike, the Scout was to long and slack for my riding as of late. I like riding remote dirt roads with some single or double track if it's there. My usual rides are no less than 25 miles with an occasional 40/50 miler. Doing a 50 mile ride on Monday, self sustained, bringing food and water(filter as well) on the bike. I don't have a recent pic of the Surly kitted with a few bags but after Monday I should. I use an older Pipeline racks single to transport my bikes. Retirement is awesome :bananadance:

Nice bike, I’m more interested in some detail on that bike rack. Is that homemade or does a company make those. Pretty cool idea either way.
