Absolutely nothing they have a foam filter that is known after a few years to break down get sucked into the air pump and its not a cheap replacement

Looks great on 35s, stock gears? the 5 speed has to help but it still has to be a slug. I have 5.29 ecgs 3rd members on order for my 2.7 AT

This really doesn't seem to be a performance mod. It's more of a preventative measure/serviceable convenience since The filter isn't called out in my owners/maintenance manual and it's not available for separate purchase. I'd stick with OEM, it just doesn't seem like a good option vs the uni-filter.

I'd rather not have to do this, but I read about enough 2nd Gen owners sucking the foam filter into the fan and destroying the fan as well as the valves at about 60k miles. I'm getting close to that, not saying it will happen, but it could.

I sucked a mouse through the air box into the turbo of my Genesis coupe, so I know what limp mode is .. I had to drive home at 7 mph in 1st gear. Thankfully it was only a few miles.

I don't want to have to think about this so I'll vere away from a stock configuration in this instance and pray it doesn't cause any other complications with the system.

Any reason why you went from 3.90s to 4.88s over 5.29? curious if it was a big difference with the gears

No BMX tonight, my knee still isn't feeling great. So I had time to do the Uni-Filter mod. Here's my write-up for any 4cyl owners who want to give it a shot:

First remove the cover to the SAIS -- it has 3 clips in approximately these locations:
    1.jpg
2 are underneath and you'll have to feel around for 'em with your fingers.. the other one is easily accessible -- just stretch it out and it'll pop right off

Next remove this screw --- its a few inches long. Once that's out, carefully twist and pull the top half of the clamshell off:
    2.jpg

This leaf-blower type filter is the culprit --- it has been noted by 2nd/3rd gen Taco owners, T4R owners, and Tundra owners alike to get sucked into the turbine and wreak havoc on the system -- this could wind up leaving me with a hefty bill and a truck that's basically stranded in limp mode:
    3.jpg

This was the dirtiest part of my filter. Overall, it wasn't terrible, I guess what one would expect from a hidden filter with 55K miles on it. Mine was a little stiffer than I had anticipated:
    4.jpg

Used 4 pennies to get this little guy off:
    5.jpg

Put the cone and the filter in a bag....who knows if I'll ever need these again:
    6.jpg

Install the Uni-Filter on the upper half of the SAIS clamshell:
    7.jpg

Align the 2 halves of the turbine clamshell -- make sure it seals up good then screw the T25 Torx bolt back on:
    8.jpg

Last -- put the cover back on -- you'd never know this isn't stock:
    9.jpg

I don't notice any noise difference on startup or shutdown. Still that same hiss that's been there from day 1. Apparently, the filter is one of multiple issues that have been documented with this SAIS system... hopefully this mod doesn't wind up inadvertently causing some other unanticipated damage. I want to try and keep my truck unmolested and whatever I have installed (for the most part) has been OEM, but I read enough to scare myself in making this change as a preventative measure.

Sweet little “write up”, I was curious if the housing would fit back over with the new filter. The old 4 pennies trick.. I can see how the little filter can eventually break down and get sucked in potentially, it reminds me of the knock off HKS mushroom filters that get sucked into turbos. You guys convinced me on why I need to spend more money on my truck. Peace of mind and a reason to pop the hood and look like I’m doing something important and productive.

Thanks Scot.. I really didn't want to do this, however my truck lives outside and I can't seem to find a Toyota OEM replacement filter, so since many others have documented this mod and it's been tested over the past 10 or so years I figured why not just do it and maintain the filter annually...seems like a good idea.....picking crusty foam out of that turbine seems like a job that I really don't care to do.
I figured there are plenty of 4cyl 3rd gen SR owners who might just find this worthwhile.

I saved the OEM parts JIC I need to go back to stock and now this is a maintenance item I will document in my manual instead of a "mod".

I'm real curious about your suspension. This thing looks setup pretty good. Do you have a build thread?

Planning to post a build thread soon, havnt made the time yet. Suspension is pretty minimal: Bilstein 6112 up front with SPC uppers and the rear has stage 1 Deavers, bilstein 5160s (in the process of relocating and replacing with a 14in smooth body shock), timbren bump stops with Ubolt flip kit, and BAMF hammer hangers/shackles.

Hey everyone. First post and I bought my 2020 SR this past weekend. It’s certified with 38k miles, V6 and automatic. My previous Toyota was a ‘93 4Runner, 3.Slow.

I made the mistake of buying a black truck at dusk and picked it up the next day. It’ll be going for a paint correction pretty soon. The build will be mild - 32” tires, hidden winch and sliders. If the winch can’t get me out the wife’s Rubicon with a winch will.

I was so close to getting a 2017 5speed manual but the dealer sold it. Thinking of just buying this one. It’s magnetic grey with utility package 4wd. Has anyone done a manual swap on these yet? I went thru half the thread but haven’t found anything

My 2020 I purchased brand new had some holograms on the back of the bed on the driver's side. They remain there to this day. The metallic paint helps a lot vs just a plain black paint job. This is my first black vehicle and I'm over the honeymoon.... Black is pointless to maintain....wash it once a season. Wax it lightly twice a year.... Call it good. My buddy just got a 2023 black SR and that paint isn't metallic... It looks like a PITA to keep.... The flake really makes things forgiving when it comes to water spots, scratches, and swirls.

Good luck .. I love my SR

Looks like you can't really get into a brand new manual transmission until the Sport model... this also makes you have to get the V6. I wasn't aware they didn't make the SR available with a manual transmission any longer.

That basically puts you at $38k for a sport access cab.

Id keep looking if I were you for a gently used manual transmission truck. Undertaking a trans swap seems like a really daunting task ... Especially on a brand new ride. I'd imagine if you were willing to perform this swap on a new SR then by the time you added in parts, labor, etc .... You might as well just bite the bullet on a sport model?
