Took it to a certified Toyota Repair Center. They said the stone guard/texture would have to be removed from the front fenders and their new texture does not match the factory, so because of that, they would have to repaint the doors also. They sent Toyota an estimate for repainting both rocker panels, both front fenders, all four doors, and the panels behind the rear doors. That's why I want them to just replace the truck.

Wow. Ours is only the pinch weld but wonder what’s going to happen to other areas of paint. Very disappointed and very close to possibly selling and going another route and not a Toyota.

Just make sure you don’t buy another white when you purchase a different manufacturer. I think it’s a fair assumption when saying almost every vehicle manufacturer currently has and has had issues with white paint for the past 30+ years. If you purchase a white vehicle, you acknowledge and accept the risk associated. Not saying the issue doesn’t suck, it blows but this isn’t something new and Toyota specific. Trade in for a new white Colorado or Ranger and see if you don’t have similar issues.

Isn’t Toyota covering paint issues as long as the vehicle is within the original manufacturers warranty?

Currently waiting to hear back from them. They submitted a product report to Toyota. So playing waiting game.

I collected my thoughts these past few days and I decided to just keep it and not sell or trade in. If I was to go out and buy a new Tacoma, I would want a manual transmission and sunroof this time around. Since the 3rd gen is leaving this year, seems impossible to hunt one down at a reasonable price.

I will just keep mine and open a claim at the stealership just to have it documented. I hope they deny it so that I can take it to my own place of choice that I know will paint it properly.

Hell I might not even paint it right away since I know more than likely the doors will eventually start peeling next.

I've owned a bunch of cars and trucks that have been white (my favorite auto color). Never had any paint issues.

I could go on but there’s really no need. Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the past 30 years you know white paint is and has been an issue.

Does every single vehicle painted white experience failure….. no.

Did I still buy a white vehicle…… yes.

Is white one of the best looking paint colors….. yes.

Will my next vehicle be white….. you bet your ass no.

Is white the only color that has issues… no.

Im aware of that which is why it was stated in the previous post…..

Keeping it tacoma specific in addition to 040 the follow paint codes for 2005-2015 trucks have identical paint peeling problems.

    209
    84P
    8P1
    202
    8T5
    8S6

Statistically, white shades have the highest number of reported issues.

Thought I would add some pics and give an update. Toyota said no to replacing my truck and no to compensating me for loss in value. They have agreed to pay the $6,700 to repaint half the truck.

So I just bought a 23 pro in white. It is ice cap but with paint code 0040 vs 040. Is 0040 any different from the previous 040 paint?

The most realistic answer is probably not. Changing the name to "ice cap" is a marketing ploy in order to make the consumer more confident in the product. Any story that a salesman might tell you about the paint or the process being different is likely bull. I am reminded of a scene from The Wire in which dealers change the name of their drugs in order to trick customers into buying their low-quality product.

So I asked Toyota about the difference between 040 and 0040. Here is what they said -

Thank you for contacting us, and we appreciate the opportunity to address your paint code inquiry.

After researching your inquiry, we have determined that there is no difference in the paint code. The paint code is just the paint, and the clear coat is always separate. We do not paint our vehicles without a clear coat.

Please know, we have documented your experience here at Toyota National Headquarters. If you have any other questions, please contact us.

    Sincerely,

    Shawn

Aint no clear coat wearing off here, thats white paint coming off.

Im not sure the "Toyota Brand Engagement Center" isnt an intern who just passes on the question to someone passing in the cubicles.
