In replacing a skid plate the other day, we noticed that there was a slow leak around the rear main seal. I have it scheduled to go to the dealership next week for “diagnostics.” Warranty issue I’m hoping, hence dealership. Question is, how long does this repair typically take? Am I going to be without my Taco for days or weeks?

Is there a drop or just staining/sweat?

Typically 2 days to repair, its a bear to get the engine out.

I’d guess a few days and they hopefully will give you a loaner.

should simply be removal of the transmission to get to the rear main seal at which point it’s a simple task to replace.

Can’t just pull the trans? Engine has to come out to replace the main seal?

yes that makes more sense haha

We’ve been pulling them as a timing cover combo.

lots of tundra v8s lately too so I’m thinking the wrong way

How likely are the timing cover leaks and rear main seal leaks on a 2023 model taco ?

Very infrequent, lately it’s been high miles with extended warranty

I’ve owned a few of these 3rd gens and with each truck they all had their own “personality” in the way they drive and feel

It's a one piece seal not 2 like a 4.0 Wrangler? Point for Jeep, that doesn't happen often.

I’ve heard if it’s just staining or damp appearance Toyota considers it normal.

mine showed a little residue when it was new (5k miles). It has never left spots in my garage and after cleaning its no longer weeping/leaking or leaving anything (50k miles)

Thanks Bishop. I guess I’m a little relieved, mine just looks like staining that has attracted a lot of dust. Seems like it shouldn’t seep at all either, but I guess it’s an acceptable flaw.

My 2016 has 67000 miles on it and during the oil change I was told my rear main seal was leaking. I have a cement driveway and didn't want to deal with staining the cement. I went ahead and had him do the change. Took about 6 hours. The new seal has different replacement part number as the original seal so I'm hoping they fixed whatever the issue is/was.
