So, my commute just got a lot longer, and I bought a used Jetta TDI wagon to save some gas money, and wear and tear on my Tacoma. Long story short, I got a Sam's Club membership for the first time because it's the cheapest diesel on my commute.

The membership is half off right now, $25. And when I went inside to get my card, they talked me into a Sam's Club credit card- 5% back on all fuel, up to $6k in a year. That's what sold me. Everyone outside of CA will laugh at gas/diesel prices here, but today that was a discount of 25 cents/gallon on diesel.

I've always been a Costco guy, but this was too good of a deal to pass up. Just thought I'd pass it along.

I had both cards years ago because it was a perk for donating my time on a credit union board. I found I used SAMS more mostly because they were less crowded, had a shop&go app that bypasses the checkout line, and I didn’t have to buy a gallon of Mayo at a time. Now I have to buy a membership and I don’t have Costco. I make about $600 a year in rewards after paying the next years membership.

Not us unfortunate bastards in WA who now have the highest gas prices in the country.

The Sam’s club scan and go app is awesome. The lines are definitely shorter than costco.
Was visiting WA in June and they’re higher up there for sure, it has gone up a lot here in TX the past month.. Was 2.85 before July 4th, but now hovering around 3.25 now

I've been meaning to check out Sam's Club, but they're not at a convenient location. I haven't been thrilled with Costco's aggressive membership card checking practices in the self check out lately. Last month one of the employees purposely bent my card when I refused to show it to him.

Gas is around $3.90 for regular at Costco here and $4.36 at the Shell near me. o_O

Costco makes the majority of their money from memberships as markups on items is only a small percentage. So by sharing cards it is basically stealing from them, that is why they are now verifying memberships. The bending of your card should’ve been taken up with management although it seems silly you would refuse to show it but whatever.

I wish there was a Sams closer by, how is the gas there? Costco gas seems to give me worse MPGs than Chevron or Shell. Costs at least $100 to fill up every time, unbelievable, I remember filling tanks for $20 during the 90s in Southern California.

I don't have any complaints with the fuel at Sam's Club, and haven't noticed a difference in MPG. I've been tracking it on the Fuelly app for my commuter car, personally my driving habits make a much bigger difference than the name on the gas station. For whatever it's worth, the gas at Sam's is not Top Tier, the gas at Costco is. I'm not too worried about it- Sam's Club sells so much fuel everyday, it's never sitting for long.

I filled up yesterday at Sam's- gas was $5.15 and diesel was $5.89.
