It'd be fun to do a custom GTO conversion of that LeMans wagon!

1974 the last year for the GTO until 2003-2006 rebirth.

 

Twenty some years ago, at this very same Uprising, there was a guy with a green '66 wagon all decked out with GTO trim, hood, grills,etc. I only saw it that one time but it was a beauty. Years later I ran into the guy and he told me he had to sell it when he got divorced.

Ah yes, the much maligned '74 Goat. I don't know whether it or the '73 was disliked the most at the time. I like 'em both but given a choice between the two I'd prefer the '73.

Yep, when I first saw a 1973 GTO in the early 80’s I thought someone badged a Lemans. I had no idea they made those until then.

 

I had one of these. There were ~7000 made, in either a hatchback (~1700), or a coupe (~5300). Mine was originally a base trim hatchback, in gold, with a tan bench interior, and an automatic on the column. By the time I got it, the interior had been switched to black with buckets (OK), the outside to a nasty mid-90s fushia color (not OK), and the engine/trans were showing their age.
I did a mild build on the 350, swapped in an overdrive trans (200R4 from a Buick GN) with a bit of converter, and added an Auburn carrier with 3.73s to the rear end. It would run traction-limited low-mid 13s at ~109mph in the quarter all day. 12s were possible, but not without better tires.
The car had 4-wheel drum brakes, with no power assist, and no power steering. Our local track has a pretty short shutdown area, then a corn field...getting that thing stopped from 110 was somewhere between yikes, and oh, f@ck.
The only pics I have are on paper.

 

I’ve got that photo saved as well. This was the CUDA that made its rounds at different events back in the day [1970] to display all the colors you could choose from when buying a CUDA.

Edit: I forgot to mention, they left the drivers side the original color that car came with.

I had a 1971 CUDA in B5 blue which was an added color for ‘71.

There is also a guy in recent times who reproduced this car with all the different colors on one side and the green on the drivers side.

Back in the 1990’s when I was living in San Diego there was a yellow ‘32 identical to this but it was running a fully chromed HEMI with a blower.
I’ll never forget the painted slogan on the back.
“HEMIS are nice but I’d rather be blown”.
