All I was is for WA to endorse filtering at lights. I don't really care about splitting, wouldn't really make nearly as much difference in life in Pullman as filtering would. WA has had a bill on filtering die in committee I think the last two years.

Helps to go slow while splitting.

Filtering in UT saved me so much time. I'd miss it so bad if I started riding again here.

There has been a bill almost every year since I can remember. It will never happen

I consider that more filtering than splitting. I know it's just semantics to a certain degree, but the 60mph+ stuff I see from California, nope no thanks.

I only split when my speed for splitting is below 45 mph and I keep it to within 10-15 mph of cars around me. I outgrew the high speed splitting stuff long ago. The only time I'll "split" at high speed is when two cars are going the exact same speed side by side and bunching up traffic. I'll quickly split through those cars to get to the open road up front so I'm not surrounded by cars, OR if the car behind me is up my ass and the car in front is going slow.

As far as lane splitting, I dont often find myself in situations where traffic is so dense that lane splitting is a must. If there is going to be a significant portion of my drive that is like that... ill drive the truck my time and money for driving extra doesnt even come CLOSE to what my life is worth.

BUT if I do for a short stent, like stated Ill only do it when cars cant physically change lanes because traffic is so dense. On the super tenere with the lighting I have, drivers seem to be WAY more aware of my presence vs my old naked sport bike (honda 919 - tho i did have some extra LEDs spot light for night riding that id often rock in lane splitting situations).

Maybe its the size of the bike, "cop like look", the red of the bike or simply a high beam at mirror level in their side mirror of the Super tenere, but I can tell im WAY more visible on the tenere vs the 919? Luckily here in CA people (50/50) are aware that its 1. legal and 2. give you even more room - ill give a lil peace sign thanks to those that "part the seas" for me.

But again im not doing more than 5mph above what traffic is doing.

I do pretty much every time try to put myself in a defensive position at a stop light by either filtering to the very front of stopped traffic / between cars if there is a pinch point but not at the back of stopped traffic (if multiple lanes) or putting myself off to one side of the vehicle in front of me if say its a single lane road and there isnt a way to move beyond the car in front of you at least a bit.

Its my second worst fear on a moto to be sandwiched between two cars stopped. First, head on making a left across on coming.

It's to flatten the contact patch to make the bike less likely to fall side to side, but it does make the front end come up slower and easier to manage.

When I was commuting I would only take my bike because it would be a 25-30 min ride vs a 1 hour drive each way. I love that the Versys is so visible as well. I put yellow Diode Dynamics pod lights on it, and combined with the red of the bike, how upright the bike is and the yellow lights and hi viz gear, I'm also a lot more visible than I was on my all-black Honda CB1000R. I had a few close calls on the CB even though I put like 1000 miles on it vs the 15000+ I've put on the Versys.

Again though, I feel like splitting gets a bad reputation because of how fast some people go. I'd be sitting in the left lane going 60-65 mph behind a car while another motorcyclist will fly by me at 80+ mph and split between all the cars. For me, as much as I'd like to go a little faster, I really don't need to take on that level of risk to arrive at work a minute earlier.

I split lanes exactly one time. It was when I lived in Hawaii. If you've ever been there, you know that the highways turn into parking lots any time there's even a minor accident. One day it was hot and I was almost out of gas and traffic was at a complete stop, so I rolled the dice. Barely made it to the gas station by my house running on fumes.

There I wasn't worried about drivers; I'm worried about police. They are notoriously terrible to military members because they know we have money and have to pay or we get in trouble at work. The only cop I saw on that ride was a motorcycle officer and he didn't stop me.

Uhhhh... nope. Can't say I've had that happen. I'd probably just call in at that point.

Hope it goes better for you the rest of the day!

    Nope, not me either.

Probably my age but at this point I've learned, often the hard way, to prep as much as possible the night before. I even get dressed in the dark so I don't wake her up since I start earlier than she does. I'm also fortunate enough to be able to still count on one hand how many times in my life I've ever run out of gas and 2 of those were on the way to a gas station!

No trip meter? I reset mine every time I fill up. I have a pretty good idea of how far I can run a tank on each of my bikes by this point.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
I had my low fuel indicator light go out and leave me stranded on the side of an off ramp. That was a joy pushing the sv650 up the ramp in full race leathers ;)

Filtering just makes too much sense for them to allow it. The argument that I heard from one lawmaker was that they won't pass it because it is uncommon and people aren't used to it. So basically we are supposed to start doing it illegally and make it commonplace before they will be willing to make it legal.
