Took the truck to the car wash yesterday afternoon, drove it home 1 block and parked it by the side of the house. It has a manual transmission. Truck is pointed downhill...grade looks like 5 percent at most. Started it up this morning, put it in gear and...nope, would not go forward or in reverse. I rev'd it up and it moved an inch while spinning the rear tires (burnout)...but would not budge.

It feels to me like the parking brake is stuck in lock...the transmission is in gear and wants to move forward but can't.

What the hell? Would water have gotten into something and seized it? If I can break the rear wheel, then the drums are fine. Engine is fine, transmission lurches forward when I release the clutch but it feel like something is preventing either the transmission/driveshaft or rear gear from going forward.

I can leave it in neutral and it won't roll down the hill. My guess is that the parking brake mech is locked in park and when released it won't disengage?

It's 56 degrees...nothing to freeze over in Cali. It's been a great truck so far. Maybe someone tampered with it? Has this ever happened to anyone?

If you can spin your rear tires, it's not your parking brake. The parking brake only activates your rear brakes.

It sounds similar to parking brake but I don’t see how it did a burnout if the parking brake is locked up? Doesn’t make sense since parking brake is rear wheels only.

If it's not too much trouble I'd jack up the rears one at a time and see what wheel doesn't spin. Then examine that brake closely to see if the pad rusted to the disk or it's a cable problem. I'd probably try some some PB blaster on the cable if that's it.

Sounds like it would be the front wheels that are holding it up if the back tires are spinning.

I think I’ve seen some posts about the same thing. Seems like the consensus was the drums rusting to the brake shoes.

Maybe the one block drive wasn’t enough to dry everything out?

Good luck, hope it’s nothing serious.

sure sounds like the parking brake is stuck - this has happened to me a few times in the winters here after a car wash, but those have clearly been cases of ice.

I've put it in 4Lo and locked the rear diff to get it going again. Might want to try that

The emergency brake probably wouldn't prevent the wheel from spinning with some force behind the wheel spin, (RPMs) but it eliminates metallic pads rusted to the disk. Sounds like the cable is frozen in the brake applied position.

If he's doing a burnout and not moving, it's not his parking brake. his rear tires are spinning, but his front are holding him in place. The fronts are not connected to the parking brake.

Can you see on the ground if only one, or both tires were spinning in the rear when you were doing your burnout?

Put it in 4 wheel drive and see if it moves. It’s got to be one of the rear parking brakes locked up.

I've read of plenty of situations where after a car wash, someone parks their Tacoma with the parking brake on and it locks the shoes on with flash rust.

Exact thing happened to my 07 after washing and sitting over night. This was around 15 years ago and has never happened since. I got it unstuck with enough gas pedal... always thought it was something with the brakes rusting up.

Thanks for all the quick responses! So it looks like it was the right rear drum that was stuck. There is only one skid mark (left rear) which caused the truck to slide into the curb. I looked up the issue and tried several things so I don't know which one did the trick. First I tried putting it into 4Lo and giving it hell...no go. Then I tried hitting the drums with a hammer through the wheel slots. This felt silly since I could only tap it and I didn't want to damage the wheels if I missed. Then I got in the truck and pressed the brakes in really hard several times. Then I applied the parking brake really hard a few times. I put it into 4Lo and it pulled through. Drove like a champ.

I cannot believe that one stuck drum could apply this much pressure. I had the clutch starting to smell (slight burning)a bit after my first few attempts.

I tried 4 wheel drive and 4Lo and it wouldn't budge. I felt like I was gonna break something. I think it was a combo of the tapping, the hard brake pedal/parking brake and the 4Lo. I remember parking the truck on the hill and watching the water roll out from the truck. I mean I'm less than a block away from the car wash. All that happened over night.

When it released it was like it was never stuck. Well, now I know what to do if it happens again. Thanks again for all the responses! Very much appreciated!

glad you got it moving. Next time give the locker a try and it'll break through easier.
