You’re right but there are spots that are easier, less lip on the rail that doesn’t pull the camp inward.

It doesn't. The rails are the same except for the notches for the tie down pieces to go in but those aren't as wide as the clamp so I'm not sure how that would affect it.

I was going by memory which apparently is not too good.
The notch is on the underside of the rail and there is a bunch not just 2 on each side.

 

Softoper with Toppertent has been doing be good for a while but after this recent camping trip with my wife being pregnant, it's not so practical-- trying to decide if I should sell the set up along with my bed platform and swap to a bed rack with RTT. Could always get a ground tent too.

 

Where will the lil tike go when they’re here? Sounds like you should keep the Softopper as the Kids tent.

In all honesty now that our first is here, I’m not too sure what I’m going to do. We picked up a bigger ground tent, but now you’re looking for a huge level spot to put it.

 

That was an idea as well that I could have a rack over the softopper and the kid(s) could be in the softopper while we could be in the RTT but my wife is pushing for a camping trailer so that would most likely be what we’d haul for family camping and I would have the RTT for solo camping/wheelin’ with the boys haha

 

Did you like your topper tent. Did it work well? & would you buy again? Under different “circumstances“.

 

I love my Toppertent! Camping alone works perfectly fine. Love the convenience that I can keep it tucked in the Softopper and set it up in a fly and how good it looks when set up haha.

Couple little things I’ve noticed though— the placement of velcro for the opening; cannot reach it on the inside, but it’s soft enough that you can unhook it while unzipping if it happened to catch while you’re inside. What takes a little longer than I’d like is unzipping the Softopper cover and zipping in the Toppertent sides when setting up and vise versa when packing up but I noticed it gets easier if you do it more frequently. Zipping from the inside helps a lot since you can see it and you have more room to use both hands. Also, if you use a bed platform with mattress you’re feet/head will touch the Toppertent if you lay straight if you’re 5’8” and up but if you only put a mattress on the floor of the bed you have a lot more room. I’d definitely buy again though for the cost if you already have a softopper. If I chose to do no bed platform I think we might have a different story since there would be a lot more headroom but I would need to figure out if there’s enough room even with the wheel wells.

Yea it was on backorder when I first ordered it last year and it came the week after the camping trip that I ordered it for haha.

 

For me, I'm choosing between Softopper and Fas-Top. I am leaning toward the Fas-Top Traveler/Topper & Tonneau option. With all options I want, including mesh panel for back window, weather seal, G-Straps, etc., the invoice looks to be just over $1500, after shipping is added. Before I pull the trigger, has anyone found a "realistic" discount (5-10%, or better) offered by the manufacturer at anytime, or has a re-seller ever discounted this item? The checkout has a place to enter a coupon, is why I ask. I have asked Fas-Top via online contact whether a tan color option is offered. If for some reason I go with the Softopper, it will be tan. Looks good with the Inferno body color. Thanks in advance.

 

What does everyone do for the topper windows as far as fogging? I live in the PNW and the topper windows fogging happens all the time.

I realize I have my side mirrors, but I also like to see out my rear view mirror. Can RainX anti-fog be used on the vinyl windows? I only ask because Softopper seems adamant that nothing more than water&light soap should be used to clean the vinyl windows.

Im in Seattle and haven’t had any issues. I clean my back window with Windex periodically or every few months.

 

I weirdly only get fogging on the rear window, never the one at the cab.
I’ll try windex and see if that helps. It’s not a huge issue, just a minor annoyance at 5am when I’m driving to work. By the time the day heats up and I’m headed home, all fog has disappeared.

 

Do you happen to park in a garage? We only have a one car garage, so naturally my wife gets that spot. I park outside in the drive so my truck is as cold as the ambient air, which will also play a factor.

 

I mitigate my topper fogging up by having it perpetually covered in dust and dirt. That and living in the desert.
