Any issues with that? I wanna do the same but thinking of welding a tab on theLCA instead. Also can you tell me how long your strap is?

I'll have to measure them this weekend. I leave the house at 5:30 and usually don't get home before 7.

So, big thread revival but here it is.

I just had OME with 886’s and recently had a shock failure that lead to some expensive damage (could have been prevented with shock inspection and stuff but principal still stands)

So the issue. In the picture you can see that one shock is close to 1.5” longer. To get these out the lca was almost straight up and down.

This is the shaft where the internal limit portion broke.

Now, yes I realize these shocks are old (100k kms) however I don’t believe this would have happened with limit straps. I don’t do any go fast stuff. All slow trails.

If you aren’t running the sway bar, I think limit straps would be a good option to ensure you don’t droop too much and cause a cv to pop. Unfortunately I had my cv pop while climbing an obstacle and it torque loaded the diff tube.

I’ll be installing these with my new setup.

Have 12” strap with the adjustable clevis. Will be going to the lower shock mount. Think 10” would have been better but it will work. Will weld the clevis to the shock tower.

    And to add to this.

Will need to adjust the straps as these will stretch to 13”. Have plenty of room on the adjustable clevis to adjust for this.

    All of them.
The angle on that upper mount might tug itself strait.

Yeah it’s not ideal. Checked out some other ways people had there’s and a bit of an angle happens. Time will tell.

7321C762-52AA-49F2-B148-C5EE41F11C9F.jpg I’m looking to add limit straps to my Tacoma and just out of curiosity, what length limit straps would you guys recommend? I’m running JBA high caster UCA’s with stock lower control arms and trail runner 2.5” extended travel coilovers and I noticed my uppers at full drop hit the coilovers and want to add limit straps to stop it. I have a list of the parts to order from kartek but I just don’t know what length I should get for the strap itself.

the only way will be to pick your upper mount, pick where it’ll be welded, and do some tape measure magic while referencing the dimensions of your upper mount. Or just get the upper mount, weld it on and then measure and order straps separately. That’s what I did for my rear.

Ok I’ll order everything and talk to my fabricator friend and see where he thinks is best to mount them and go from there! Thank you I appreciate the input!

Thanks for the input and I wanted to ask for the part that is welded to your lower control arms is it the 7/16 mount or the 9/16?

All considered it seems like limit straps are the bump stops of down travel and the most ideal way to protect suspension components but not 100 percent necessary for general use.

I'm running Bilstein 6112's in the front and 5160's in the rear. When I first learned that the 6112's were shorter travel than the standard replacement Bilstein 5100's I was disappointed. Later when taking into consideration that the shorter shock length is preventing the suspension joints from binding I was happy to be using stock length shocks.

Now I'm looking to upgrade to the Icon RXT extended travel rear leaf pack which is going to transfer the down travel limit force from the leaf springs to the shock. There are trade offs with all of these factors. While I don't think anyone would argue that its not the best to use the shocks to limit down travel. I would argue that in the front if you're not running straps the shock is the best way to do it over the ball joints and cv joints. In the back however using the leaf springs is ideal but good luck finding leaf springs that have the exact amount of droop to allow full articulation of your shocks while not allowing them to overextend.

For the front my thought is that if you're not running straps the shock is the more durable way to limit the down travel compared to other components. In the back you can't say the same thing but if you're not clacking out the down travel at hight speeds on whoops or jumps I don't think that occasional slow speed tap outs in rock crawling scenarios are going to kill the shocks if you're careful about it.

That being said my plan is to use my shocks to limit my down travel for highway and moderate intensity off road use. In the front it will protect the ball joints and CV joints and in the back it will allow full down travel. In the case that I start wanting to jump the truck or hit whoops at high speed I'll get the straps so I don't clack out the internals. If I can't stand worrying about it and I want the best of both worlds I'll freaking spend the money and time to install the straps because damn it... I have accepted that this project is way more expensive and involved than I initially thought.

Added driver side strap today then ran out of time. Will do passenger next week. Need an 8" strap instead of 9" to make it perfect. I used the stuff from Kartek, and cut down the clevis hardware to hold 1 strap instead of 3 so it's smaller and couldn't turn to hit the coil. The goal here is to get rid of the BANG sound/harshness/potential damage of the kings topping out when they do. One trick I did was use all thread to get the mount lined up perfectly for welding (see pic).

Can’t remember but if they are stretching to 13” I would imagine they started off as 12”. Also the straps and everything are still working. Still have plenty of room to adjust to limit travel.

That’s where that loud bang comes from. I went fox on the new truck because I hated that from my previous setup with king

yup, I did limit straps on the previous tacoma as well because I disliked the thumping sound.

with so many Tacomas on kings I was surprised to not find people complaining about it.
