Is it worth it?

I have a trd sport with the 8 inch rear axle. 77k miles, been running 34 MTs for the past 3 years. I am coming up on needing new tires within the next year. I want to get the standard load ATs 33s that are way lighter to see if mpgs get better along with rpms screaming in 4th at 75mph on a small up hill. Or should I just get 35s and regear. (is going 35s on a trd sport with 8'inch axle worth it?) I am getting the itch for something different then a tacoma and so is the wife with two kids now. Ive just put so much damn time and energy into this truck I cant imagine selling it right after paying it off.

 

What on earth are you trying to do? The trans is known for gear hunting on stock tires and you wanna slap 34s on and go 75? Or go down to save money on gas? Or complete opposite of that, get even bigger, regear, and spend more money on a truck you can't even tell you like?

I'm truly just confused on what your goals even are.

If you were in this exact situation, but it was 10 years later, would you have felt that you got your value and want to sell?

If so, just accept the sunk cost and do what you really want (which sounds like getting a different vehicle). I mean, part of what makes building a truck fun is the time you put into it, I would try not to feel raw about the "wasted" time/effort.

 

truth is I dont wheel much anymore so down sizing sounds good as it is my daily. but also going up in tire size has always been what Ive wanted. But at the same time not trying to dump more money into a truck I might sell in a year or two.

 

I'm in the same boat of wanting to trade vehicles. I wouldn't keep sinking more money into a vehicle that doesn't meet your needs. Have you looked at vehicles you're interested in or checked on trade in values? You could sell the truck yourself and obtain financing elsewhere.

 

Maybe you just need two trucks. Pick either this one or another one and go HAM, big tires skids lockers etc. Really send it. Then keep one that is far more commuter based for regular use stuff?

 

Trade up to a Raptor or TRX.

 

I mean if you've always wanted bigger tires there's only one way to do it.

got something in mind to downsize to?

Should stick to the 33" skinny tires, that the original overlanders have used over many decades. Bigger is certainly not always better.

Yeah a commuter has been an idea as well, probably a must if I decide to go all out on this truck. My buddy just bought 275/80/17 milestar xts and i gotta say they were pretty sweet tires.

 

If I were to spend that type of money id go f250 with carli suspension and 38s. towing>speed and a 8ft bed diesel with a camper would be so sick to overland.

 

same boat, upgraded my lift and suspension, was thinking of long traveling the back... then never got around to actually installing everything, now debating on a new vehicle.. and jus trading in my taco ‍

 

About $12,000 in suspension, huge to drive, and if anything breaks be ready to dump 3x more than what it would cost a Tacoma to replace.

Bigger isn’t always better

 

I mean sitting in a full size in comfort rather then the corolla size feel in a tacoma is a pretty big plus in my eyes. Not wrong diesel repairs are wild.

 

Back in the day, my work friend was torn on what to do with his K5 Blazer. It was borderline as a practical daily, and fuel prices were starting to spike. A basic used Corolla solved everything, and the K5 became his weekend vehicle. Just a thought.
