Hmm good looking out. I will pass the info on to the guy working on it to have him take a look. I'll also look into the Redline fuel system cleaner. yeah to my understanding from the guy who owned it before it sat for about a year untouched because the guy was military, then broke his leg when he got home so couldn't ride lol. So very possible it's some clogged up injectors.

I would think so but I had him look at them and see if they needed adjusting when I first picked it up. he's gonna double check again to be safe though.

Thanks good to know. My stock seat isn't too bad, but for a long ride like that I'm sure it's more than worth the investment

Thanks! I did so much research for the last Iron Butt ride that I found it to be super easy. This one was very impromptu. I chose a route over the weekend and didn't really prepare much otherwise. Still made for a fun time and I'm glad I got it done!

Yep! Beautiful sights for sure but lots of traffic and construction made it not so fun. There were a few sections of 36 where the road was freshly paved with no traffic though, and that was just majestic.

Then I got to 99 which was just straight hell with all the lane splitting and heat...

Welp good news and bad news on the dirtbike. But not really bad news. Good news is he checked valves, compression, both checked out perfect. Also cleaned the throttle body for me.

Bad news is the issue was simply a fouled up spark plug lol, which is something I could have easily done myself. But oh well. His labor is cheap and it's worth the peace of mind for now. At least I'll know for next time.

Said he's gonna hold it until end of day then start it again and make sure all is good, but confirmed once he replaced the spark plug, the bike started first kick.

Apparently so lol. I'm gonna order a couple extras to keep on hand. Maybe throw one in the MX gear bag and keep one in the garage.

Your successful completion of the ride with minimal prep speaks volumes about your bike and the quality of upkeep you do to be willing and able to just hop on it and go. In June I did a Memorial Saddlesore nested in a Bun Burner and had a fellow FJR owner tag along for his first ever IBA rides. Now @FreshOldTaco has expressed interest and the plan is for the 2 of us to take on the Ride Around Pennsylvania Saddlesore next year together. I've managed to make every cert ride I've ever done be something beyond the normal rides and want to continue doing it like that. I'm actually giving serious consideration into trying to get a spot for the '25 IBR so I guess I better do some more practice rides.

Thanks! That means a lot. I feel a lot better about just hopping on and going after putting together such a comprehensive tool kit under the seat (including the Cruz wrench that you recommended).

I would love to attempt an IBR at some point but I don't think I have the stamina to do repeated 1000 mile days, at least not with my current setup. As much as I love the Versys it does start to get a little painful for me (my knees are still sore from yesterday).

Biggest thing really regarding the IBR is you need to build a solid resume of not just rides but some rallies as well if you want to have any chance of getting in. I did the Mason Dixon 20-20 rally from 2013 through 2017 or 18 and the Void Rally from 2013-2019 then later the Co-Void Rally in 2021. I've also done several smaller 8-10-12 hour events. In 2019 I gave my FJR to an IBR rider on day 10 in order for him to finish the rally after his BMW suffered engine failure. I know quite a few IBR finishers and have been told with this resume I stand a decent chance of getting in. I never thought about it that seriously until this year when I went to the start near Pittsburgh on the way home from my cert ride and a couple of my friends asked if I was in it. Now.......well let's just say my fiancee has offered to pay the entry fee and is encouraging me to try and get in.

Do it bro! You only live once…my goal was to stop the grind, get on the bikes everyday, and help those wanting to get into it. If you have the opportunity, seize the moment!!! One never knows if the chance will happen again.
    Brapppp

Man I really enjoy all the posts in here. We got such a wide variety of riders of all ages and experience.
Wish we could have some sort of TW Rally…fuck work!

    Thanks!

I have no aspirations of being a top finisher or podium level. Those riders are animals! I'd be more than happy with just achieving finisher status and get that 3-digit number! Hard as it may be to believe there are fewer riders that have completed the Iron Butt Rally than people who have gone into space. I've been fortunate enough to compete against and/or meet a fairly large number of those people and to have shared meals with a few. It is possible with a good route to achieve finisher status in about 8k miles but the top dogs of the event may ride over 14k in that same 11 day period.

I really want to try something bigger and more touring oriented like your FJR or an R1200RT/K1600GT and see just how far I could push it. The Versys is a little underpowered for high speed cruising and keeping it above 80 makes it a little buzzy, which after 20 hours can get pretty tiring.

I say to myself every day that I wish we were all closer lol.

I have one riding buddy here in San Diego, and he just started the process of becoming an EMT so his free time just dropped sharply. Have tried getting in with a couple other groups but just don't seem to mesh...lots of stunters and irresponsible riders I don't feel entirely comfortable riding with.

Exactly. First place is for losers lol! I say that 2nd tier is full of gold placers! The chance to be even invited to such an event is clutch.
I know a few key players in the enduro world, and I take every chance I can to go to a clinic or a BDR ride.
The stats you put up are impressive and the stories/pics you share are inspiring. I have had a blast reading all y’alls adventures on here. From daily rides, to unseen boulder stops. We got some racers and people putting on crazy long rides.

Keep posting routes. I catalogue everything that that is posted, for future rides. Street and dirt.

That FJR is calling you bro. Lots of my buddies have ridden them for years. Some come from the FZR, and others the BMW K1200s.
Simply said the smoothness and power for the long haul just can’t be matched. Sure you could get an even larger bike, but that FJR has the sport touring down. Lots of linear power, enough weight to take the vibes/wind, and sporty enough with ~145ish HPs to shred the canyon in comfort.

I will own one at some point. After I am finished with my KTM giant twin phase :)

I want to! But I would also like to try and get the Versys to 100k miles. It's so cheap to own and operate as well that it's hard to justify getting a replacement right now.

I'm actually looking for a sport bike so I can stop beating on the poor Versys on the weekends.
