As I have said before, I work in public recreation. I am happy to be quiet and not speak to anyone and sometimes even prefer that. But my job has required me to speak in public, often in front of hundreds of people, for various purposes such as presenting awards for a program awards ceremony or soliciting public votes for pumpkins that kids have decorated, as a few examples of the wide range of the types of public engagement I am required to participate in. I often have to confront people who are not behaving the best or tell parents that their children have not exhibited the best behavior or made the best choices. I have kicked people out of facilities we operate before, even having to call the police to have someone removed. I have certified thousands of coaches in youth sports training clinics and have to run various programs directing employees, volunteers and the public. In a previous life I sold cars for a year and a half. That job taught me how to approach anyone, how to read most people and how to accept being treated less than wonderfully by people and to not take it personally. My wife would tell you that outside of work I find it more difficult to not engage with people than to interact with people and that is probably true, depending on my mood.

I do know that I view events differently than most. When I am at a sports or performance venue, or participate in some type of an event or program, I catch myself evaluating how well everything is set up. I appreciate what it takes to put all the pieces in place for a well run business, event, performance or program. I have also discovered I react very differently to events than most. Over the years I have seen thousands upon thousands of sporting games so I do not react very much. I often just sit and watch without saying much of anything. When the Patriots came back from 25 down in the Superbowl against the Falcons I watched the game alone and did not swear once when they were down and my celebration was a single fist pump after the winning touchdown. No one wants to take me to a sporting event!

Maybe that is the next poll? Do you watch professional sporting events? Yes, as much as I can and I scream loud and proud! No, professional sports are useless and a waste of time! No, I only watch my kids play sports! Sports? What is that? Biggest waste of time ever invented!

 

Most of the time, no. If they have a sweet Tacoma or are wheeling with us, yes. That's how I make new wheeling friends

 

In idaho id talk to most hunters i met on road, mostly to get intel on where animals were. Id rarely say i saw any though

In my past life as a business owner, I belonged to related professional organizations, spoke at conferences, a major part of my career was sales, etc. Now, I can literally go weeks without leaving the property and be content.

Being in Costa Rica with almost no Spanish, makes me long for the hustle and bustle of my empty shop, and the outright mayhem of a treestand.

Naturally it you tell someone their idea won't work they dig right in.

I did what I called "smile & nod" and they would go away.

Then I did what they needed instead of what they wanted.

Show them the job, it works and they were happy - nobody ever caught on all those years.
