IMHO, it all depends on what you want to do with your truck. If it's a pavement princess, lift it to the sky and shove giant tires under it. If you like to take it off road, a 31 or 33 (max, again, IMHO) is all you need. The difference you gain in ground clearance is very small. Theoretically, if you have two identical trucks, one with 31s and one with 33s, you're only gaining 1" of additional ground clearance. Most guys are not truly honest with themselves when they think about what type of off road driving they really do. Going out of some trails, getting to some hunting/fishing/camping spots/etc. can all be done with a stock truck. Of course, serious trails and rock crawling will require more mods (larger tires, suspension upgrades, etc.).

The problem is, most guys will watch YouTubers who have the truck they think they want. The thing is, most of the YouTubers do not daily drive the trucks they have on their channels. Plus, they might not even own them. It's a hell of a lot easier to beat the snot out of a truck you don't own, don't make payments on, don't need to be reliable as a daily driver, etc.

My short answer is just keep it stock or go up one tire size. Your truck and your wallet will thank you.

Solid thread revival and I assume you are asking yourself this same question. I love my 2.5 OME heavy lift and the SPC UCAs along with my 275/70/17 KO2s on 17x9 Vision Manx II wheels with +12mm offset have served my needs perfectly. I would encourage you to consider...

    • Are you one to trade in vehicles every 2-5 years? If so DO NOT lift your vehicle unless you plan to sell on the private market.
Most dealers want factory equipped vehicles that are not modified since that is what the banks will base their lending decisions on. You will lose your ass on the cost of the lift + wheels + tires, etc. so do not get a lift if you are looking to get out of the vehicle what you put in. I just went through this evaluating a Diesel Tremor with 5k miles on it and was about ready to pull the trigger on a 90 grand truck but the dealer wouldn't come up 7 grand and they didn't want me to part out the accessories (greedy bastards). Dealer offered me 33k for my 21 TRD Sport w/ 41k miles. 33k. I have a winch, leitner rack, ditch lights, decked drawers, 5k of lift wheels ucas and tires + a full size spare and wheel. And they offered me the going trade in on a base TRD Sport.

I bought the TRD Pro for the slight lift and because I thought the appearance was a bit more aggressive than the off road. I will probably up size the tires to a 75 series and leave the suspension stock. It has gotten me everywhere I need to go so far.

I did upgrade the springs and shocks and struts on my 4runner and only lifted the front enough to level it and it has been a tremendous improvement over stock. No more nose dive when breaking.

Absolutely love the my 2" Bilstein 5100 Lift, and upsized tires. Should have done it sooner...

Note: Must update my signature pic, as it was taken before the Lift.

I upgraded leaf springs and gained a lift. I wanted stronger leaf springs-that do not sag so easily and better shocks, but have no real interest in owning lifted trucks. I drive on forest service roads and some access roads in the mountains that require 4wd but nothing serious.

Stock clearance on the Second gen trd sport is decent imo. You put on a tire one size up over stock and gain a bit more.

If I was to do it over, I may have chosen springs with a max of 1.5” lift, Unloaded, Im looking at 3” of lift, which is excessive.

This is the most practical setup IMO. Cheap and effective and the driveline / CV angles stay within specs.

Stock, my mud flaps would scrape on speed bumps, so yes. I’d absolutely do it again. No issues since lifting about 6 years ago

Yep, looking at a 2in lift, 275 or 285 tires, and enjoy the wide range of perspectives on this site.

Bought my truck in July, and really like a few modestly lifted ones I see around town.

I plan on keeping this truck for many years.

I’ll add that I did the tall skinny thing, 255/85 r16 on stock suspension for four years which worked quite well for most of what I do.

Gotta lift them a little bit. I've got a heavy fiberglass canopy and without a small lift it would look like a Dodge Grand Caravan

I don’t regret my lift it was a necessity for me, however i do have an extremely strong belief that the bigger the tyre (and heavier) you do cut down the lift of your transmission and engine. Just by having 33s on my 1st gen it was making my transmission run hot (verified by scan gauge)
