Yeah, all I have for gear is the Marrakesh jacket, so it's not real warm. Breathes amazing, though.

Chilly at 67°? o_O I'd ride all day if that was the low. I tap out in the low 50s/high 40s. But I'm fat, so I have some natural insulation.

I love this post! Very well said. It's a huge sense of accomplishment that most people just look at as being crazy (well, I still think it's crazy but I also know I'm crazy so it's a good match).

I think part of the allure to me is just how time starts to warp on super long rides. Starting in the dark, watching the sun rise and then set and riding in the dark again, while seeing a huge variety of different roads, scenery, etc makes it feel like even though I'd been riding for the entire day, things that I experienced in the morning didn't even feel like they happened on the same day as what I was experiencing at night.

Speaking of FJR's, which years do you recommend? I'd like cruise control and the 6 speed, which probably means 2016+?

I did find this purple one (with the top case!) and I love it, though:

The Aerostich heated jacket is on my list to buy during Black Friday (hoping for the usual 10% off and free shipping sale). Then I will be extra toasty on the way to work!

Wife and I were spotted on one of the twisty roads!

PS my bike sorely needs a wash. And new turn signals.

Look into "Warm and Safe" for your heated gear. They actually make much of the gear being sold under other names. they usually have discount cods on the net somewhere. If I come across a code I'll post it here for you.

I was excited to see they have a liner for $130 but then saw a $100 heat controller is also required.

My first FJR was a 2007 and if it hadn't been for the accident I likely would have kept it forever. The day it was hit I had just turned 127k miles. I bought it with 8k on it 7 years earlier. That Black Cherry Pearl is still a favorite for me. I specifically looked for a 2014 after the accident for the Candy Apple Red and cruise control.

There really are no truly BAD years of FJR, some do have little tweaks and upgrades that make them a little more desirable. Cruise control became standard in 2013 along with heated grips. The 2013 cruise is limited to 82 mph or around that number. That's easily remedied with a 2014 ECU or an Ivan's reflash. 2016 is the first year for the 6 speed but all 2016 through 2018 bikes were recalled for a second gear issue. I've ridden with some guys with the 6 speed and it doesn't really make a huge difference IMO.

Personally knowing you want cruise control I would just keep my eyes open for a 2014 or 2015 with some tasteful upgrades or reasonable mileage. There are quite a few FJRs running around with 200k and more that have required nothing more that normal maintenance.

Yesterday morning it was 41, then 75 when I can home after work. Thinking I'll probably put the Hippo Hands on this weekend to help fight the morning cold. Grip warmers dont do shit for the back of your hands, hippo hands are phenomenal at that. Turned my seat heater on a few times this week, too, that there is an amazing feeling when it's chilly haha

The controller is a bit steep but I'll never go without my remote dual zone controller. I can set my jacket liner and gloves for different amounts of heat and that is nearly priceless.

It looks like 2014 also released the FJR1300ES with inverted and electronically adjustable suspension, so a 2014-2015 ES is the one to get for me, I think!

If the FJR were not so 100% road biased I'd be sorely tempted. Looks good and sounds like they ride great. Keep us posted on what you find. With Chuck's posts I was looking at them, but I think the Super Tenere will handle my crappy road better and the highways well enough to keep me happy.

    Lol boring.

Driving a car anywhere is more boring than riding a motorcycle on the most boring stretch of road, IMO. there are exceptions of course such as supercars in the canyons.

My response to those kinds of people:

Lol. it amazes me the amount of people who buy bikes, keep them for several years only to put a few thousand miles on it over the span of their ownership. Seems to be especially prevalent with supersports. Are they scared of it or something?

Hell yeah. no better way to start the work day. I even got paid to ride a little bit this morning!

yes 67 is chilly here and we stand by it. But I'll ride all the way down to the mid 40's if it's dry....layers and heated grips do wonders.

Santa Ana winds are really warming up Southern California this week lol. Put my jacket liner in at the end of last week because it was cooling off, then was sweating my ass off Monday on the way home from work.

I can't use it for work, I don't have a commute, free time is rare. Not everyone has time to put thousands of miles on a year

One caveat about the ES model. Currently there aren't many shops offering to service those components when they were out and replacement is costly. The regular A model offers a lot of good aftermarket support and is easily upgradable. I snagged a used Penske rear shock and had Penske rebuild it then later added Hyperpro fork springs and my total out of pocket for everything is about $700. Admittedly I got a killer deal on the rear shock. I do know one rider in South Carolina with a 2014 ES model with about 140k miles on it and absolutely zero suspension issues. The ES is convenient AF though for adjustments.

that's fair and my heart goes out to you.

But i know of more than a few guys who buy them just to park them in the garage and don't have much in the way of limitations preventing them from riding. They just park it and clean it. Those are the ones I'm talking about lol. Or guys who have multiple bikes but just choose to ride one and rarely ever touch the other(s) out of choice, not necessity.

If I could free up the money for a Super Tenere I would add one to the garage without hesitation. I know a few FJR owners now on the Tenere for the reasons you stated, they want to explore new areas that might not always be paved.
