Same here until my diff wouldn’t lock. Dealer swapped some parts and hasn’t howled since.

ETA: 21OR at about 18k at the time, so parts were warranty swap.

I've had sr5's since the early 80's, never had a drivetrain issue.

Most report that it takes a few thousand miles before the howl starts.

It’s a confusing matter. If it is indeed a harmonic noise then I would think the sound would be there from day 1. Who knows.

Well at nearly 24,500 miles the truck is still smooth, and quiet. Reminds me a lot of my gen1 tundra how it was.

My 22 TRDOR does the same thing. Found several threads here on it and so I’m just leaving it alone. Started at about 8000 miles and seems to not be as bad at 12,000 miles.

i switched to 80w-90 conventional and the diff sounds/feels a lot smoother. 140 weight as ECGS recommends is way too heavy. I tried it. felt like i was pulling a trailer

From what I have gathered, it seems like the noise is more prevalent in the OR models with the rear locker.

Thats exactly what the dealer here told a buddy of mine that complained about it in his 2019 trd or. Said its normal...all it did was piss him off more till he finally traded it for a frontier.

The rear whine is fixed by adding dampner weights to the rear cab mounts and then installing 2 foam c pillar pads to the back of the inside part of the c pillar.

    A few.
Seems to be the rear leaf spring paks. There part of the tsb that was put out for the issue. Those and the rear cab mount dampers. I personally purchased the cab mount dampers on my dime and installed them. Didnt make a bit of difference on my 2019. I basically wasted $200.00. I think its possible with some trucks the dampers help and with others changing the springs helps which is why there both part of the tsb. But it still comes down to a harmonics issue. My own opinion.

i had the same issue with my 2016 trd off road ( 3rd ) now rear diff , this last one (3rd one ) start making noise after appox 8 mile but the truck was out warranty. so i owe it. as a ex car mechanic that is in contact with ex Toyota mechanic that now Toyota district representative . that the gear pattern needs to be check before installing the rear diff.. it was finding that the pinion depth is not correct for the gear set. this needs to be corrected before install. if the pattern not correct & once the rear diff gear set break in it will alway be noisy even if the your to change the pinion depth at a later date,, i try many different gear oils but din't change much for noise ones the diff got up to temp ..

My dad had this tsb done last Friday. He said so far so good with eliminating the whine. Seems like it may be a good fix.
He had already had dealer rebuild the rear diff last year, but the whine had come back.

Has anyone posted a clip of the sound?

Mine started making a sound a few months ago, it sounds rotational and oddly only at 19-22 mph.
