Tailpipe Rusted Off

2007 Tacoma with 62,000 miles and the tailpipe rusted off just after the muffler. Exhaust tip is also half rusted off. I know the welds are suseptible to corrosion but never thought it would only take 4 years. Dealership says 3 year 36,000 on exhaust but took a look anyway. Regional or Corporate service guy wants to "cost share;" they'll cover $450 for all parts and hardware if I pick up the $45 labor charge. Hmmmm . . . I'm still thinking this one over. NAPA says they can get the same parts for $225 . . . nice markup, Toyota. What's really disappointing is that the truck has been in several times over the last couple years, most recently for its 60k mile service, and the dealership didn't see or say anything. So much for honoring their service schedule, which includes an inspection of the "exhaust pipes and mountings!"

Anyone else have this kind of corrosion issue with their exhaust?

Of course, in this situation, letting the dealership replace the exahust is the cheapest way to go, but I'm curious what the rest of you think regarding whether or not they should eat the labor or if I should just bite the bullet?

45 bucks or 225 bucks.... easy decision for me on this one....

No question, if the dealership is going to pay for parts that is the way to go. Getting the NAPA quote was just to see what parts really cost. More interested in opinions on the quality of the product, if anyone else has had a similar experience on the Gen2's, and/or whether or not the dealership could be expected to cover labor since they claim parts are twice what they really are. I appreciate the comments.

I've always been under impression that NAPA had quality parts. I mean no disrespect, but you must be kidding. An exhaust system that fails after 4 years/62k miles . . . not sure that can be considered quality no matter who makes it. I drove a '76 Mercury Monarch (Ford Granada) in highschool and the muffler didn't fall off that thing until the early 90's . . . well over 150k miles. Regardless whether or not it was a materials or process issue, quality of the OEM product in my particular case can not be argued. Just my opinion.

 

Answer seems obvious to me, argue for an hour and get no where (or maybe have the deal be pulle doff the table) or pay $45.

 

For $45.00, couldn't get my wallet out fast enough. I would jump on it and thank the dealer for stepping up.

 

Hmm interesting....the same thing happened to my truck. However, mine is a 96 that hasnt skipped a salt filled winter since it rolled off the assembly line.

The pipes on my 05 still look like they did in 05. But I'd pay the $45 and be done with it.

 

The longer I think about it . . . I couldn't agree with you more. Out of warranty . . . could of told me to take a hike. then I could have spent twice their total cost for dual-exhaust and better sounding mufflers!

Iowa winters are not much better. They love salt brine on the roads here in the winter. Great for marinading fish, bad for your truck!!

 

Dealer said they've never seen that level of corrosion that soon before . . . I just assumed it was their "standard response." As was mentioned earlier, gotta give them credit for stepping outside the box and sharing the cost.

the rest of the the system seems very solid still but does show signs of excessive wear in my opinion. Anyone else with comments on the condition of their OEM exahust system is appreciated.

I myself would get something fabbed out of aluminized steel and go on with my life.

well considering that you have an aftermarket exhaust one why would the dealership cover it under warranty?
