My green beans that I planted in April are finally producing, lol. I thought about cutting down the vines a few times but it was too hot and miserable to work the garden. Looks like a lot more on the vines. Other that that just one tomato plant is giving up some small fall tomatoes.

Forecast is for a colder than normal winter, in the southeast. Do not forget to mulch your plants really well this fall.
I have a lot of warmer climate ornamentals (elephant ears, angel trumpets, etc), they will be getting a double of normal pine nuggets and pine straws.
Same with the fruit trees and figs, need to keep the roots warm.

    Is that for insulation?

I just created a new Landscaping thread. I have enjoyed this thread greatly and while there is some landscaping posts in this thread I wanted to create a thread that would expand on the landscaping part a bit more and dive a little deeper into design, hardscaping, garden buildings, paths, arbors, decks, outdoor rooms, etc.

Please check it out and post if you have something you are willing to share. Thanks!

Yes. Wet soil and thick layer of mulch keep roots warmer.
My 1st Brown Turkey fig died in winter of 2014, down to the roots. Roots stayed alive, it came back and now is 20 feet wide and 15 ft tall.

We had several very cold snaps last winter. I ended up putting large flower pots upside down over the elephant ear bulbs (put large rocks on the top to keep pots in place). All bulbs survived.
Frantically putting more plants in every weekend, so they have time to grow more roots. Put 6 plants last Saturday. Have 2 dozenish more to go (half of them are blackberries). Got another Japanese maple ("Crimson Queen", have 2 "Bloodgoods" and 1 "Laceleaf" already), I love Japanese maples) and a Little Gem magnolia on Sunday. More holes to dig. :)

PS still need to plant 3 chestnuts (for eating), 2 lindens (for linden tea), Bare Knee cypress, 3 aronias, 2 Josie lilacs, an angel trumpet, 2 gardenias, and a holly. And 12ish blackberries (which will mean building a new trellis).
And need to order the Olympian fig.

For us farther north in a much colder climate it is still for insulation but for a different reason. We could not keep the ground from freezing up here so the bed of insulation is to make sure the ground does NOT thaw during the winter as the alternating freeze/thaw cycle is what is tough on plant roots. And depending on the landscape around your house you could have multiple micro climates where you MIGHT be able to place some cold sensitive plants so that they are more likely to survive and thrive. I have planted some tender root plants over my septic system tank in the past as the warmer water in the tank keeps the soil quite a bit warmer.

    You in VA? Yep.
I am in GA, but nights are too cold now for the fruit to grow larger and ripen.
