It may be ok, but it could be better. Never been on any toyota forums till now. Just my observation from comparing it to my gen1 tundra trans. That 4 speed was sweet. I would of been very happy if this tacoma ran similar with that transmission.

I've had my 2020 4x4 v6Auto since oct. the trans works well, but does downshift too soon, and takes too long to upshift. with stock tires and cruise set to 67 mph it does get 25+mpg.
I'm 85% ok with the trans.

My 2017 transmission has not acted up. I guess it only has 48k miles, so there is still hope I can fit in here lol.

Mine is a 16 and they did a computer flash and it was better, since then have not had any problems with it. I don't think there has been any "hard" changes with the transmission, I think its only been a software update.

Mine seems to be just fine. Only have a 1k on it though and it does seem to hold a gear for a little longer than one would think at times. I dont really think about it as it is an automatic and does its own thing. Drove about 100 miles the other day and set cruise to 80 and it was fine. Sure it down shifted to hold the speed or speed up but that is what it is supposed to do got about 19MPG. The main issue I think is the lack of low down RPM torque on the 3.5 for how 6th and even 5th are geared.

I came from a 2015 Scion tC with a four banger and a 6 speed and it shifted all the time. Only time it could remotely accelerate on the freeway without downshifting was if you were going 80 because the engine was close to the start of its torque band.

Another one of these threads, I see you have seem to fallen for the "transmission is garbage / problem" nonsense spewed around here.

I've had a 16 and two 17s, both were fine transmission wise 99% of the time, 16 had the reverse cold crap that 15's also experienced (low fluid from factory), both 17s only issue was the occassional hesitation when trying to rapidly accelerate say from 1st or 2nd (merging on highways, etc.) that was dangerous and pretty annoying, but not always there, transient issue for sure. My three 19's after the software update were flawless, no issues. My 20 seems to be the same.

I would say its been addressed since the TSB in 2018-19, though most people will continue to complain and say there is a problem. It's an auto transmission in a baby v6 truck, its not a sports car, its not gonna be perfect, especially the first miles when its learning. If you are that picky about it I would say opt for the manual, but it is a way overblown complaint here, along with some other things.

I've got basically the same truck/drivetrain with the stock 245/75 16 tires. Been on the highway at 65-70 mph, best i've seen is 21.2 mpg. Really no problems on the interstate roads at that speed with the transmission when the vehicle is empty. Its on secondary roads, and carrying, or towing loads the trans gets very busy. Still it gets great fuel mileage considering all things compared to the tundra.

I'm unsure about the earlier or current transmission issue, but I do not like the calibrations for the engine and for the transmission. The combination of the Atkinson cycle and the Otto cycle makes a nonlinear behavior and I don't like it; the engine should just be left in Otto cycle. The transmission is lazy to downshift and, even with 6 gears, it couldn't seem to be in the right gear. Running in Power and S modes don't seem to make much of a difference and a gear could not be hold in S mode. The calibration is so bad that I'm looking to get rid of the truck.

I had a 2018 Tacoma and just traded it in 2 months ago, I wanted the cement gray and 4 door. The transmission in the 2020 doesn't hunt for gears as bad and doesn't hold the gears as long. I think it is much better!!

I was able to test drive a 2020 last week and it did feel better to me. Seemed like it would hold gears just a little longer instead of just racing to 6th. It also responded pretty quickly to throttle input and downshifted as you would expect. In the end, it's still the same transmission, so it's not going to make everyone happy.

For me, the Tacoma just suits me so well that a quirky transmission wouldn't keep me away. In fact, I'm picking up a new 2020 TRD Sport this weekend! :D

Just bought a 2021 OR coming from a 2018 Sport. I’m agreeing with this comment, a much better shifting transmission.

My ‘19 never had any of those issues. My buddy’s 16 did, but the TSB cured it.

He's unaware that a simple tune would fix the "gear hunting" affect. That's what I think he's referring to.
