I ran 255/85 r16's for about four years on stock wheels and suspension. Its a good easy and inexpensive (compared to lift, wheels, tires, CMC) way to give you a more aggressive look with added performance and a bit of extra clearance. Slightly limited on tire choices and they are expensive, however there will be more options with your 17in wheels.

Bilsteins 5100s on the top setting, 4runner Gray TRD Pro Sema wheels, 285/70/17 Toyo AT3s, Sumo Bump stops, TRD exhaust, ECGS Clamshell bushing, 1/4 shim for the lean and one inch rear block, OEM Pro grill and garnish OEM TRD Skid plate, TRD CAI, Demon Brackets, Rigid Industries Pro fog lights, OEM Trail Rails sidebars, Diode Dynamics LED SL1 high and low beam lights, OEM Roof racks, Clazzio leather heated seats, Remote Start, TRD Pro shift knob, tinted windows, Rockford Fosgate 4 channel amp for the headunit and sub and amp combo, OEM Puddle lights, OEM tailgate lock, OEM bed mat, LED interior lights, OEM blackout kit for letters, JLT catch can, upgraded 27F toyota True Start battery, Vleds led tail light kit with Pro tail lights, OEM Rave4 side mirrors with convex spotters, just to name a few mods.
I run the 5100s on the top setting now, up from the 4th setting with a 1 inch rear block with no difference in the ride, been on 5100s for 4 years and about a year ago I raised the front a little more for a almost perfect level look with the slightest rake. I have a front diff drop and a rear carrier drop to maintain correct drive train angles and SUMO Bump stops front and rear. I too have the 4Runner SEMA wheels in grey +4 off set with 285/70/17 SL rated Toyo AT3s up from 265/70/17s AT2s. I have the stock UCA, factory mud guards and a great alignment yields no rubbing and no cutting. I avg. about 18 mpg around town, running a KDMAX tune, TRD CAI, TRD exhaust and a hypertech inline speedometer calibration. I was looking at the 255s but the weight and after seeing them on a Tacoma killed it for me. They are well respected off road but killed the tough look I was after but too damn skinny looking for me, plus if I do any wheeling nowadays its on the beach or a trail and that has yet to happen as I use my old 99 4Runner for that. OP either Bilsteins will serve you well and if you really want 285s then this setup is ideal and will serve you well.

I've got 5100's on the top setting and with the SEMA wheels I was told that you can run 275/70/17's with no rubbing, due to the width and offset of that particular wheel. Those wheels are tires are my next upgrade. I want the 275's but they are a lot heavier and cant find a C rated tires to cut down on weight, so i'm in between the 265/70/17's and the 275's. I also cant decide between the black or bronze SEMA wheels on my black TRD Sport 4x4...

Being on that lift, should i go ahead and change that diff drop and carrier bushing? I've only got 5000 miles on the truck but would be all in for preventative maintenance. Also thinking of swapping the needle bearing for the ECGS clamshell bushing. I'll probably get new UCA's eventually too.

I had our local off road shop do mine, also the ecgs bushing. They are a well known shop out here in Va. and they did mine turn key perfect. The 285s fit perfect!

Quickie question …. Can I take the TPMS off my old wheels and just re-use them on the new wheels? My thought process is … as long as I put Front Right in the new Front Right, etc … everything should already be programmed for them.

you did the diff drop and carrier bushings too? That’s probably something I need to do too. Those are pretty easy installs correct?
