Evidently there are two things coming up. I might just go to whichever one more people are interested in.

    Edit: forgot the pics:

Just got home a little while ago. I decided to stay an extra day camping after Applefest and grabbed a camping spot at the Birch Grove campsite we stayed at last time.

This morning sucked, just gray, cold, and wet. Mostly it made me want to pack up right away and head home. Didn’t even bother making coffee. Even though I wasn’t motivated to explore, the sun started coming out by around 9am, so I gave myself an hour to poke around the local forest. The roads were mostly nice soft sand, so at least it was a nice ride.

Am I ever glad I stayed a while!!! I drove around the Washburn district for 4 hours and it went from nice, to wow, and at one point, the vistas even took my breath away…no joke. It was not what I expected. The Washburn district of the NF is a really interesting mix of typical forest. On the north section, it had this coastal vibe, and before I knew it I was in an open savanna-type landscape which was beautiful. Lots of elevation changes too. Took me a realize these were probably huge sand dunes. I rounded a corner and saw a huge bowl in the terrain, had to be a quarter mile wide, a few hundred feet deep, very few trees around, and covered in grass, like every where else in that section of the forest. My jaw dropped, maybe because I was not expecting this type of terrain.

The trails were all mild, except for some washouts that are hidden behind crests…gotta be careful with those because they are big enough to roll you if you hit them at any sort of speed. Sections off this area seemed like they could also appear in africa. Blown away.

Has @pearing been holding out on us, or just not know about this area yet? :p In fairness, most is not technical in a Moaby kind of way.

    Here are a few pics.

The one below is the huge bowl. I struggled with taking a pic that would carry the sense of elevation change…we all know how that goes.

Not holding out at all... just have a soft spot for the Penokees. We certainly can play on the Barrens side next year. I can say I am not a sand guy and there is a LOT of sand in that area. We went through a good chunk of it last year... Not sure where you were-can you send me a Gaia track?

It was definitely fun! I just found it amusing how quickly the recovery gear came out.

I'm also glad we used it to keep going, rather than turning back.

Lol understandble. The sand was super easy today, maybe because it’s was fairly rained on over the last few days. How bad is it in dry weather?

No gaia track, but I took this screenshot.

Ahhhh. That area is south and west of the actual Barrens (the locals call it that.) That region is large and extends several hours south and west of highway 2. VERY different feel. Where you were on 818 is a beautiful section, I agree. Not typical of what you will find north of hwy 2.

All the kids play in the Barrens because there is sand and mud (and that is what kids seem to like.) That is about it: sand and mud. Big sticky messy mud holes. And then sand. Seems like a place @Peeing on jeeps might like...

Yah... as they say-you don't know me and I don't know you. You made a comment a while back about mud and I am running (or throwing) with it. Thicker skin might be in order if you are going to cast the first stone so to speak. Don't know that a bit of fun is a label, but I will stop with the mud references. Until you make an effort to come meet me at a TW event I'll just leave you be. Yes, I do teach young people. I have spent my life doing it. I doubt you would understand.

Thanks, but then again, it's easy when we are in a target rich environment :)

So I wasn't in the Barrens proper? Perhaps it looks like there is still more exploring for me to do next time. Does the area I traveled have a name? Because I think it should have a name :p

Nah…the guy is quite the hoot. Anyways, this kind of bantering and jack-jawing goes better around the campfire fire.
    George it is!

@pearing This is a zoomed out section of George. I pretty much travelled all the dashed shaded trails. George basically feels like dunes with grasses that have grown over them, with small stands of trees here and there.

Well... the whole mess from the lake south an hour or so is as I understand it are the pine barrens. Locals have some different interpretations. You were in the barrens, but that area is south some. The "barrens" are north of hwy 2.

Guys, I'm itching to get out with these tires. I have obligations Saturday, but I'm thinking I want to head up to Tigerton Sunday morning, maybe get there around 10 or 11, and tool around for the day and camp Sunday night. The river sites are all still open for Sunday night. Monday I might stick around and hit more trails in the park, or more likely, I'll head elsewhere to catch some other areas and fall colors.

So... anybody else wanna get out there? I still need to get off of work on Monday, but that shouldn't be a problem. The weather forecast looks chilly, but dry. Of course the fact that I've mentioned it here means WI TW rules apply and it will rain.

Edit to add: Not trying to juke @McSpazatron here. We spoke and unfortunately our schedules don't match up for the weekend.
