    That's kinda what I was thinking but I've never seen one with a hex nut to turn it, they've all had handles on them but you are probably right.

    Larger/special application valves have all kinds of different configurations beyond the regular handle.

    Valves with actuators (air or electric) often have a position indicator on top as seen below, sometimes they include a nut like that to manually turn the valve too.
