I am picking up a new Offroad M/T from the dealer tomorrow. I’m pretty excited that the truck is finally here, but I’m always wary of the dealers. I am paying cash and confirmed the price again today. They have also sent me the Costco price via email multiple times, so this seems reasonably straightforward, but are there any tricks to watch out for?

Conversely, is this a time where there are certain things I might be able to get a better deal on than after I walk out the door? I’m thinking stuff like a bed mat or other accessories. Thanks for any help! Buying a new truck is a new experience for me and I appreciate the wisdom of the herd on here.

    Congrats!

The warranty, undercoating ceramic coating and probably a few others. You can buy Woolwax and do the undercoating yourself for under $75 a year. Unless you like throwing money away, avoid letting them ceramic coating and take it to a reputable detailer if you want it.

check out this thread if you want a warranty. There is another thread with more info but it’s about the same person- https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/extended-warranty.814212/#post-29202168

Make sure to clarify how they will take payment. I’ve had some dealers accept a personal check written on the spot and others only want a bank check. None have wanted a pile of cash on the table.

Otherwise just have the printed out emails stating pricing in case they say something different and be ready to walk out if they don’t honor it. Most dealers will skip all the finance room BS if you just let them know you are absolutely not interested and are just there to sign paperwork, pay and drive away.

Practice saying 'no' for a couple of hours before you go.

So it's easy to say to all the things the finance guy tells you you really need to buy.

Just FYI, any transaction involving $10,000 or more triggers an investigation by several alphabet agencies. That is why they don't want cash. Just withdrawing that much from your bank is a PITA and will trigger the same investigation.

That is an old 1980's law meant to stop drug dealers from laundering money.

I had $15,000 in cash that I was going to use to partially pay for a camper last spring. I took $8K to the dealer and deposited $7K in the bank then wrote a $7K check to the dealer. That kept me under the $10K limit on both ends.

The $500 and $1000 bills were eliminated because it was too easy to transport millions.

I’ve got a good detailer for paint protective film and window tint, so they can’t get me there. And I do most of the other work on my vehicles myself. I wasn’t really thinking about the warranty at all, but thanks for the suggestion and the link. Sounds like doing it at the dealer is definitely not the right way to go, and if I want one at all, there are much better options. I’ll do a little bit more research.

All good suggestions. I am armed with printed emails and a personal check that they say they will take.

Most dealers will take 5k or so on your CC.

Get some air miles or cash back from that, then just pay off the card when it posts.

I think its probably safe to say whatever price they email quoted you is only going to go up. Just be prepared to say no and walk, if things don't go like you'd hoped. Its your money, so it might as well be the truck that you want. Inspect it, drive it, drive it again, then drive it again. Too many people are buying trucks they've never laid eyes on, just to say they have something new, then come to TW to vent about how their "brand new truck shouldn't be doing ____," yet they all do. Just drive it before you sign, thats my advice. Just bc its new doesn't meant its perfect.

Picked up the truck this morning. I used Costco when shopping for this one, and when they ran the updated Costco price today, it was actually $500 less than what they quoted me back in June when I put the deposit down to reserve it. And that's despite the MSRP going up by $200 in that time. So no funny business there. The warranty price they started at was $3600 for 8 years. They added a 20% discount that they "forgot to include" after I declined, but the price was still $2900 for 8 years. In the end, took less than 2 hours for a nice test drive, saying a lot of "no thanks", twiddling my thumbs while waiting for the finance guy, and ultimately leaving with the truck I wanted and nothing else. Thanks to everyone for the advice here. Definitely good to be prepared going into these things!

So what was the final out the door price? 2023?

$42,797 including tax/title/registration and Costco discount in Washington State (Burien Toyota): Off Road, Manual, Basic Technology Package, All Weather Floor Mats, Door Sil Protectors and nothing more. Exactly what I wanted.

It does pay to shop around, and in my case the Costco discount was about $2600 off MSRP and the $1000 deposit I put down back in June was fully refundable and applied to the final price. Another dealer in this area just 20 miles down the road told me $2500 over MSRP and they needed that full amount as a non-refundable deposit. Stupid. The other nice thing about Costco is they give you a 50% off coupon to use at the dealer if you fill out a satisfaction survey. It can be used on any accessories, service or parts. I'll probably use it for the bed mat once I get it...and maybe a trail grill so i don't get stuck in the mud

Make sure you stick to the price. They always try to get more. Also inspect the inside, outside, underneath.. check for rust cause they'll try to hide it

The post right above yours shows it's a done deal with no problems.

I agree with inspecting what you receive, but looking for 'hidden rust' on a new vehicle seems a bit extreme.
