Newish to the fourm. I purchased a scangauge 2 to see how bad my mpg was with geolandar 33s and monitor my trans temp. I found out the hard way that my 98 tacoma doesn't register temp via obd2. I was surprised to see today after loaded with firewood and on country roads going about 55 that I was within normal range for milage. 22mpg on the dot and averaging 17.5 in town. Not to shabby. I fall in love with this truck more and more each day I own it. Although I did just switch my tires to an all terrain from a mud tire. Probably will go down a bit this next summer when they get reinstalled. Much love tw fam.

Is it 4x4? I've never been able to get over 17.

I might have missed what engine this is..and how many miles driven for that average? My 02 3.4l 4x4 has only been able to break 20 mpg on a tank when it was bone stock, and all highway. With lift and 33's, nope, not my truck.

Yeah its a trd offroad 4x4 3.4l with166k miles. I'm thinking the scan gauge is off then. I was loaded down with firewood and I have RCI engine and trans skids and Coastal Offroad bumper. I was shocked to see this but it maybee to good to be true. I have OME heavy dakkars and bilstein 5100s in rear and 5100s and the heavy OME 2883 springs in the front. And my wife and two small kiddos were in the truck.

I'd do the math next time you fill up at the gas station to get a comparison. If you're getting 22mpg, I want to know more about your truck! Mine is the same engine, and also loaded down with heavy stuff.

It's been years since I've messed with my Scan Guage, I thought there was some setting that can be adjusted to make it more accurate when using larger tires.

I would calculate it the old fasioned way before you get to comfortable with that reading. My 99 prerunner gets 21 avg according to my ultragauge as well as my odometer calcs. When I first got the UG it was lying to me and said I was getting 24 until I calibrated it a few times, now my average and DTE read accurately

May be wrong but I've read all the info that came with the Scan gauge II I have. Believe that MPG shown is for whatever throttle setting you are at for that moment. Mine varies widely, low MPG when on the throttle to crazy high MPG if coasting some long distance down a hill. Have yet to figure out how to get true MPG for a tank fill up without using the trip feature. For that reason I don't use that gauge setting anymore, just RPMs, voltage, temp and MPH.

There are those gauges you are referring to in the Scangauge. I think they are the regular suit that comes with the gauge, not programmed X-gauges for your truck.

I can't think off hand what the 3 letter designation is but I have mine set up to read AVG for the trip currently in, instantaneous and AVG for the tank, in TRIPS.

I got 16.7 at the last fill-up and thought my math was wrong it seemed too high.

2.7 Extended Cab 4 X 4. Drive like a grandpa because I am one, bone stock and get 22-23mpg constantly. Measured by Scangauge and pencil and paper at fill-up.

You are probably right and what I was trying to say. Guess I need to study up on it. I get 19 around town and best I've seen on a road trip is 23, keeping track pencil and paper at fill up. I think the key to good or "better" gas mileage is what I've read here previously, keep it 70 and under.

Speed and big tires will kill the MPG's!

I have an '04 3.4 doublecab 4x4 with a standard leer shell and yakima racks. Tires are KO2's, 235/85-16's. My truck averages 17.5 mpg on my commute, about 20 miles, mostly freeway at 70. Yes, it's a reverse commute so no traffic. That's per the scangauge. Doing math at the pump is pretty much the same. Coming downhill from Mammoth, I can make it with my family and a week's worth of ski gear/coolers/clothes home after fueling up from the Fort Independence Reservation gas station which is 330 miles. I'll usually need 17, 17.5 gallons to fill up, so that's about 19.25 mpg. But that is downhill without traffic and riding E for enough in ~Escondido. I don't think I'd make it going uphill and wouldn't try with my family in the Truck.
