So I'm doing some research into the stock radio to see what I can do to... er... WITH it. In case anybody is interested, here are all of the FCC documents (internal/external photos, FCC info, test reports, etc):

    https://fccid.io/AJDK102

I'm still unable to find the actual radio specs or user manual... but I'm still digging. I have a couple theories on what it's capable of but am unable to confirm currently.

Thanks for posting. I'm interested in the 04200. Paid $1700 for the SR5 Sonar, "Premium Audio" and Navigations package.
Still a bit peeved about the "Premium Audio" not being improved head unit and/or speakers for sound quality.
However, I now understand that less than "premium" has scaled back software in the same 04200 chassis.
Still not clear on where the HD radio function resides, in Nav unit below or in the 04200 but not enabled.
For those looking for the 86140-04200 head unit with NAV, be sure to ask for the interconnecting harness.

This isn’t exactly accurate. Nothing is scaled back about your HU, a 4200 unit is a nav/XM unit no matter what truck they put it in - same unit. For improved audio rather than just including navigation, you need a JBL unit. They’re different units and audio systems with different part numbers, a JBL unit never has a 4200 part number

So what's the difference between the terrible sounding "Premium" audio and the terrible sounding "non-Premium" head units? Just nav? If that's so, that feels like bait and switch.

That seems class action-able. Accurate advertising would be Audio vs Audio w/ Nav. Calling it PREMIUM Audio implies the audio is better (better speakers, better radio, etc) than standard Audio and is part of the package that includes navigation.

@McHale You have read my mind (or between the lines of my bitchin and moaning) about the Toyota audio mis-leading information.
Apparently, they disable some features on the 04200 HU for SR5 vs SR5 with NAV.
However, it appears that HD radio is included with the NAV package and so "supports" the claim of "Premium Audio".

They don’t disable anything. SR5 without premium audio and 8” screen has head unit 4230. Units with nav are 8” and #4200. The base unit is a 7” screen and no nav, #4110. JBL is 8” screen, has nav and is #4210.

    @bluetaildragger www.toyotapartsdeal.com describes the 04230 HU as Guam/Saipan spec.
I'm confused now. But sill agree that, as advertised in Toyota Literature, "Premium Audio" is mis-leading.
Considering the difficulty in obtaining definitive information, it appears that the confusion is intentional on Toyota's part.
If a class action emerges, count me in.

PS: I've read on this forum that folks w/o the nav package are missing more than nav, but that's not clear either.

You’ve probably read from guys that retrofit 2019 and earlier trucks with with nav with 2020+ head units without nav. In that case, you lose the current music playing page, compass, and speed limit info on your main instrument cluster. This is due to them going from a nav unit to a non nav unit.

Clear as mud? Hahah… they make it quite confusing for guys like us

Okay this took some digging as Toyota doesn’t make it extremely obvious up front. The “premium audio” units have HD radio. The non premium units do not. The speakers are the same. In order to get an amplified system with a subwoofer, you need the JBL system. Hope this helps

@bluetaildragger , thanks for the effort.
So, I'm guessing that HD radio function resides in the NAV module and the head unit software likely accommodates the nav/HD radio or not? Is there anything else?

Are schematic diagrams for the head and NAV units available?
