In the shitty winter months I do that as well. Run out, start the car, lock it, come back outside 15 or 20 minutes later with the windows defrosted, the ice and snow melted, and the vehicle warm. The auto-start is nice but won't quite accomplish the same thing.

How to you get it to lock? Mine wont lock from the fob when the truck is running and it won't let me do it with the door lock button.

Lock it with the key while the truck is running. Once you do that the ONLY way you can unlock it to get back in is with the key. The door and fob unlocks won't work until after you've unlocked with the key.

Still a choice of exposing to the risk. I do not live in "cold" anymore and used a garage for 20 years so have no memory of "outside parking".

Is it mandatory that everyone go home at 9pm when the siren goes off?

You just can't be on the street if you're under 18. True story - I was walking home from a church field trip at 10pm and I got hit with a curfew violation and had to do 40 hours of community service. Did I mention I lived 2 houses away from the church (and I was wearing dress clothes, dress shoes, and a necktie)?

I think they've relaxed more lately because the crime when I was a kid was almost non-existent. That police force have better things to worry about now.

Same thing. MT and 2 keys. Could probably do something similar with a Faraday bag.

Why won't remote start accomplish the same thing?

Because it turns itself off after like 10 minutes and I'd have to monitor it to see if it's still running or not.

I get the OP’s want to leave the truck running and locked. When it’s -50°C and I want to warm the truck up, there’s no way I’m sitting inside of it waiting.

(no remote start here and I’m 25 hrs from any shop or dealership)

Mines 15 mins and the app counts down the time for you. If you need more than 15 mins you can remote start it again one more time for a total of 30 mins. That's plenty.

It's also more convenient and no extra risk of the car being stolen. Can also use the app when I can't even see the car; for example in a restaurant go out to a nice warm car. Living in the Chicago area no way I could go without it again.

Only thing I dislike is the engine turning off when I open the door. Poor design on Toyotas part.

Actually it's a safety feature. If you have it running outside and someone breaks the glass and opens the door it would keep them from stealing the vehicle. Now... if they broke the glass and climbed in through it, game on!

    BTW, howdy neighbor...

That's why I hate it shutting off with the door. If you were to climb through a window it still dies when you hit the brake, you can't take it out of park and the column is locked. So really opening the door and it shutting off is just an inconvenience and adds no safety. But that discussion is for another time and looks like something Toyota is aware of and updating!

And luckily I live in a nice area and don't have to worry too much about that. I like being able to start it without having to get dressed to go outside. though; especially since I have a detached garage.

Tell me you didn't read the thread without telling me you didn't read the thread. Your question is exactly why OP posted this thread and it was answered on page 1 or 2  You need to take the physical key out of the FOB and lock the vehicle my guy.

Thank you forum police! Thank god you are here to put me in my place...

I was actually hoping for another solution other than using the key.

Perhaps the OP wants a fob with two keys so one can stay in the vehicle running unattended while the other key can be removed to go inside the store or the house or ...

But then that means the car should be NOT drivable with only one of the two fob-inserted keys present, which gets us back to "shuts off when door opens is extremely and intolerably annoying" again.

    Hmmmm

I will stop posting here, even reading. After this one ...

The truck currently shuts down after opening door when remote started. Keeps it from being driven off without the key/fob present. That is good.

People who let the vehicle run completely unattended have assumed the risk of theft. No convoluted logic built into fob/no-fob/key/no-key will predict all situations. Take the risk, accept the consequences.

My wife’s old grand Cherokee had keyless entry and pushbutton start. If you left the car with the fob you could lock it while the engine was running, which was very useful in winter weather not so much here in California.
