Not a sound but a feeling of roughness

It's not the gas. There is another thread on the same subject.

Some people feel it, and some don't. About 50% of the time, while stopped at a light in drive I can "feel" the engine running a bit. I can feel it in the seats. No where else. Only does it stopped and while in drive. In park and neutral truck is smooth as glass.

My girlfriend doesn't notice it when it happens, so I chock it up to some people are just more OCD and sensitive than others. My 2018 was the same way and so was my 2nd gen.

I hate to be that guy but at this point you should maybe look at other truck options. I think after your 6th 3rd gen you're always going to find some sort of issue in your head that's going to make you hate the truck. These trucks rattle, shake, make weird noises etc. These trucks really are just cheapy budget trucks with a big price tag.

Same here my 2020 idles so smooth I forget sometimes the truck is running. Idk, if toyota has changed anything on later trucks.

I can't say that about my truck, it has no rattles, or shakes. It's been a really nice solid, quiet running truck over the last 3 years. Idk anything about those newer mexican built ones, as I had made sure I got one built in texas when ordering mine.

You might just not be as sensitive as others.

If I drove your truck, I can 100% guarantee I would feel something off about the truck.

I consider myself average as far as noticing any vibration, roughness, or a ride not very compliant. A buddies 2019 trd or had its quirks. Maybe I just got a better than average build. Its a better truck than any I've had in the past.

I am sensitive about such things. I also have a new '23; but mine is a MT so essentially in neutral when at a stop light. When new and driving it home, I noticed an occasional stumble when at idle. Very small thing but I still didn't like it. Now I don't want to get things started here . . . but I switched to premium gas and the stumble went away. I assume it was because the timing was slightly advanced due to ECU programming and the higher octane fuel.

It sounds like your situation is similar but a bit more extreme than mine. Personally I would take it to the dealer and have them sort it out. If they say it is normal, ask to test drive another new one and see for yourself.

I filled up with the 93 octane yesterday gonna give it few days see how it reacts. I have appointment scheduled for Wednesday at the dealer. I’d think if it was something actually wrong it would have thrown engine light on by now though

Timing usually won't advance at idle.

I ran 93 for about 2000 miles straight. Same with 87 as it was with 93.

I think you are off in the weeds worrying about things like octane rating and engine break in. I suspect either 1) the engine is fine but your expectations don’t align or 2) there is something wrong with the truck that your dealer can fix for you for free. I see very little value coming to you from this website at this point.

SM's normal idle timing is 5 to 22 deg.
Real world range in DI mode 5 to 12
    Port mode ~10

During the idle you may observer a fluctuation of rpms and AFR due to purge valve opening.

Well that I would agree with and I’ll admit I am beyond anal. At the same time again… I’ve owned a lot of 3rd gens but the truth is EVERYONE of them had a quirk I couldn’t stand .

It’s not that I don’t like the truck dude. Just find it strange that each one seems to behave very differently with their own annoyance. Buying a different vehicle would be of no use. I’m not complaining because to complain. More curious then anything

So at what point do you stop buying your way out of these issues and try another brand. To me it seems like you will never be happy with a tacoma so why spend so much $$$$$$ on them.

I’m just gonna keep the one I have. Actually drives the best no real annoying sounds in this one. Besides the rough idle I actually like this truck the most. I’ll wait for a tsb or for it to smooth out. I do love tacomas but the forum is for asking questions and communicating so that’s what I’m doing
