I would prefer to say wiser and seasoned... Though I am quite certain some would disagree. @kyle11863

So, is everyone here onboard with the 2023 (56th) Baja 1000? Around 1,311 miles long!
It is in one month... I think race days are the 16th & 17th of November.

For the first time, ever, the race begins in La Paz and comes north to finish in Ensenada.

From La Paz, it passes through Punta Conejo, Lopez Mateos, San Javier, Loreto, La Purísima, San Juanico (Scorpion Bay), San Ignacio, El Arco, Bahía San Rafael, Bahía de los Angeles, Codornices (San Antonio), Punta Blanco, Faro San José, Cataviña, Coco's Corner, Gonzaga Bay, San Felipe, Valle de la Trinidad, Ojos Negros...

My first Baja 1000 (to watch) was in 1973 (Ensenada to La Paz, via San Felipe, L.A. Bay, San Juanico). I filmed some of the racers a few miles east of Ojos Negros, just past where the pavement ended. I was 16, and my dad and I camped by some large, flat-topped boulders we thought would be a great viewing location. The next morning, a hundred others showed up to watch the race there, too.
Here is my 3+ minute Super 8 film (with period music):

No plans to... I have been dealing with a lot of sciatica pain that is keeping me from having much fun!
The last Baja 1000 I was involved in was 2006, when we helped Baja Pits with communications at El Crucero. The four-wheeled racers arrived after sundown and some were pretty battered already:

Nothing is more exciting than being in the Baja 1000!
My time came in 1979, which was the first Baja 1000 to run to La Paz since 1973... the first 1000 I went to watch.

1974 was a mess with the Mexican run Baja Sports Committee (BSC) having replaced NORRA in running Baja races after the '73 Baja 500 (June). I heard there was no money for all the winning 1973 1000 racers when they got to La Paz, so when BSC tried to have a Baja 500 in June 1974, it was boycotted.

The businesses in Ensenada and the governor of Baja California invited Mickey Thompson to bring his new SCORE organization to Baja California (Norte) and run races. The SCORE July 1974 Baja Internacional was a huge success and BSC was dissolved. Mickey said he did not have enough time to organize a 1000 that year (1974) following his July race, so that was the only year without a 1000 race.

In 1975, Score had a 1000 course that was a large loop that started and finished in Ensenada. The same concept for '76-'78, as they had not made a deal with the southern state yet (Sur). 1979 was the first year for Score to run a race to La Paz, and I was a co-driver in that one! Great fun, indeed... even though the race car (Class 6) broke early (rear diff grenaded).

I was 22 in 1979 and this photo was when race car owner (Skip Ylhainen) had me drive the Datsun 510, a week before the race.

Here are my jacket patches and starters' pin:

Hi guys, Im back for storytime with Jason!
I've been somewhat MIA for the last week or two, I was working insane days and using up every second working in order to afford to pay the Co-pay of my insurance for my Shoulder surgery that I've been needing for almost exactly 3 years (Halloween 2020 is when I got injured) so I've been sucking it up ever since however with copious amounts of pain ever since which never resolved itself like most injuries I have had in the past. Those motorcycles can bite so watch out!
Its ironic, when I think about almost every major injury I have ever sustained has been from motorcycles, and 95% of those were off-road incidents, yet I cannot wait to go out and ride ASAP!! Kids these days... and those old kids are even worse!!

I had the surgery last Thursday at Scripps Encinitas under general Anesthesia with a nerve block and the surgery that was estimated to take just over an hour (based on what was seen in the MRI as well as my report of symptoms).
Well, estimates are just that, an estimation of possible damage and what it should take to repair. I think due to my rather high pain tolerance and the fact that I work a heavy labor job nearly every single day he was under the assumption that it shouldn't be too bad.

Fast forward to the day of surgery and it took 2 full hours and he found far more damage than anticipated and it was really bad, the doctor called me later in the day after surgery and said that he could see "pain" inside the joint and that they had to reattach my proximal bicep tendon that was over 2/3rds frayed, he also performed an Acromioplasty (grinding of the acromion bone to relieve shoulder impingement and repair of the rotator cuff tendons).
He found a full thickness tear in the rotator cuff so he had to remove a lot of dead tissue that had built up over time during the repair.
There are 4 surgical incisions and it was all done arthroscopically, so they didn't have to filet my entire shoulder open like last time..so there is that I guess!

But at least I got it fixed so now Im impatiently waiting to heal and as many of you know I absolutely suck at waiting for anything, but it is what it is.
I supposed to be wearing the arm sling for 6 weeks, then start therapy at 8 weeks from surgery date, and it is supposed to be fully healed within 8-12 months, so I guess that means next years racing season wont be a full season for me! Ill be able to start racing mid year and working on getting back into racing shape so that means Ill be fully ready by the 2025 season to go race full time again.

So I'll have to take it easy for a few weeks, Ill be doing some work starting next week as the one armed bandit so Ill be working twice as hard but at least Ill be able to work on things that arent super heavy and require 2 hands so I'll still be able to do cab chops, however they will take me far longer than previously until my dead arm is revived!

I have attached some pics of the inside of my shoulder for anyone interested that were taken during the surgery so you can see the damage, its supposed to be fairly smooth inside and not look like riced crispies and frayed fiberglass from what I gather...I think the damage is fairly obvious even to the most casual observer.

Take your time on the recovery. I had a full thickness tear on my rotator cuff as well and had surgery. It wasn't fun and I know what you're going through.

When you start PT do every bit of it, including the home stuff. I'm back to 90-95% range of motion and I did my PT religiously.....

If you need any PT gear let me know. I still have all my home stuff

Glad they took care of you. Shoulders are an absolute bitch. Exactly what @chuam said, follow the PT regimen. Go slow which is obviously not in your nature. They know if you're cheating. Hope to see you out at Superstition in January.

Listen Jason, if you don't follow the doc's orders, it isn't going to do you well. It is the only shoulder that arm has and you can't buy an after-market one... at least for a reasonable price! LOL
We need you happy as well as healthy... racing can wait another year... heck riding the motorcycle should wait as long as possible. Do some Jeep'n because 4 wheels really are more stable than 2!
Okay, enough big-brother-style talk, ha ha.
    Get well soon, amigo!
PS my latest procedure to alleviate the sciatica pain (now discovered to be caused by a synovial cyst, instead of a disc bulge, on my spine) failed, they try again next month, if that fails... then the back surgeon is on stand by!! When you get old, comparing pains is the norm!

I have a pair of 2014 Tacoma OEM headlights (used, in pretty good shape), and a pair of 2004 4Runner OEM headlights (used, in fair shape, they’re original) if anyone wants them. Would prefer them for someone who actually needs them and not just a reseller.

Heading for "The Springs RV Resort" in Borrego Springs next month in my Minnie Winnie with a group from my neighborhood club. (www.srop.org) It's to celebrate a Birthday for one of the guys, just an excuse to drink and hang out!
I spent many a night when I was a kid camping up in the canyon above Coyote Creek (Sheep Canyon) outside of Borrego Springs. Lot's of brain cells still blowing in the wind!

    Thank you, I appreciate that!

    Thank you!!

Oh that sucks, I hope you get it worked out soon. The last 3 years of compromise has been torture..I can only imagine. Sorry to hear that buddy...

Well, I might be a special case to be studied. Last time he did the surgery while adding hardware I was riding my dirtbike in 3 weeks. But yeah that surely wasn't an ideal situation.
Now that Im older it wont follow the same curve obviously. But that being said I'm doing a lot better than anticipated, but I'm still taking it pretty darn easy for me, haha...

Thank you! I hope you are doing well!! I still have my left arm with a broken proximal bicep but it doesn't seem to cause any problems with symmetry, so I got lucky there, but it sure does look weird. I have one Popeye arm..
Hope everything is going well for you buddy!! And hope the truck is working well.

That's good to hear David! Sciatic issues can be a real pain in the ass (no pun intended) I also have bouts of time where mine gets pissed off too and its not so awesome...
Thanks Dave! Hope everything else is going well for you!

Now I have just been dealing with some cluster migraines so that's a bummer but that's how it goes sometimes I guess. Hopefully they stop sooner than later because they are a MFer to say the least.
