Throttle body is not closing all the way

I have a 2011 tacoma 2.7L automatic standard cab. Approx 180,000miles on it.
After changing my oil and air filters recently I've noticed some engine issues. Rough idle/sputtering, rpm fluctuations in idle (1000rpm which already seems a bit high to nearly 1500 with not even heat or a/c running) and temporary spikes while in gear after releasing the gas pedal. Starting yesterday it doesn't want to get above 3000 rpm or about 20mph when starting in the morning. If I let the engine heat up then turn it off and back on it will run, but still with the rough idle. Via Google research I thought it might be a dirty air intake control sensor however after taking the throttle body out and cleaning it I realized my air intake is automatic and sealed so there was no way to check it as well as that my throttle body wasn't completely closing. There was still about a 1-2mm gap. Could this be causing the rough idle issues? Admitted I had never cleaned the throttle body nor even used any fuel cleaner since purchasing the vehicle in 2015 (about 150,000 miles ago).

 

I do not have any pictures of the throttle body gap. Didn't think to snap a picture while I had it out

 

Electronic throttle bodies don't close completely in their at rest state by design, they are designed to stay open a bit at rest so if there's a problem that disables control of the throttle body the engine will still run at a limited RPM.

You have a check engine light on, have you checked what code(s) you have?

 

Yeah, you need to scan it for codes.

Is there a possibility you knocked something loose while changing the air filter?
I’d start with scanning it for codes, and inspecting the engine bay. Particularly in the area you working on.

 

I'm getting spark plugs and the 2 sensors tomorrow.

 

The guy at autozone also recommended checking my ignition coils soon

 

They are just trying to sell you more parts, do not start chasing the misfire codes until you resolve the timing codes and do not replace the cam or crank sensors trying to fix the timing codes.

First off check your oil level and condition, if that's good pop the VVT solenoid out and make sure it's not stuck.

 

I really appreciate all the help. I'm very much an amateur at this. So the oil level is dead center on the dip stick between high and low and just changed less than 500 miles ago. I'll have to check the vvt this weekend. Spark plugs are over due for a change anyway

 

If the plugs are due anyway by all means do them but don't start replacing coils and such just yet as the cam timing being off is more than likely causing the misfire codes to set.

 

So did some searching both and off forum think I found the vvt on the bank 1 side just wanted to confirm? First image is looking at the engine from the front, second is from the drivers side.

 

Looks like it, I'm not at my pc right now to look at pats locations.

Ironically I just had to replace that water bypass pipe at the bottom. The plastic factory one cracked and I was running ragged trying to figure out where the coolant leak was coming from. I took it to a shop for the install of the new metal one though. Way more work than I was willing to take on.

 

So I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure this solenoid failed lol

 

Oh wow. I hope none of that cruft made its way into the camp gear assemblies. Can you see into the hole where the valve goes whether there’s any of that material sitting in there?

 

Eww, wonder where all that came from, looks like plastic.

 

Not sure if it's plastic or ceramic. Not sure where it came from either way but very concerned considering if never even so much as left the oil cap off unattended so that almost had to have come from internal components. The hole looks clear.

 

New solenoid comes in tomorrow

 

I wonder if it's maybe gasket maker from assembly or a previous repair where someone used too much or put it in the wrong spot because all oil going to the solenoid goes through the oil filter and VVT screen first.

 

Should I check the vvt screens too?
