As long as they are same transmission and drive line, ie 4x4 or not.

    drive line = 4x4 or 4x2.

A 6-lug Prerunner (4x2, RWD, whatever you want to call it), is going to NOT have the transfer case, so the intermediate shaft (from the transmission to carrier bearing/propeller shaft) is going to be a different length.

A drive shaft from a 6 lug double cab with an automatic transmission and 4x4 will fit a 6 lug extra cab with an automatic transmission and 4x4.

A drive shaft from a 6 lug double cab with an automatic transmission WITHOUT 4x4 will NOT fit a 6 lug extra cab with an automatic transmission and 4x4.

Why are you trying to replace your drive shaft?

so i went to my nearest part store and tried to get u joints for my cardan joint. unfortunately all of the u joints for 4x4 weren’t the same size as the one i removed. but then they got one from a 2wd driveshaft and is was about the same sz as the oem u joint i pulled out. so i ended up buying the one for the 2wd, replaced it but now the clips for the u joint won’t fit in. so i’m already just giving up at this point and trying to see if i can just replace the rear of my driveshaft with another.

Shoulda started out with some searching... The u joints in the double cardan are generally considered non-serviceable. Most drive shaft shops will just cut them out entirely and replace them (which would still be an option for you). However, if you've got it apart, there is a chance you can actually get the right parts and put it back together.

    From this thread here:
Double Cardan U-joint Teardown '02 Tacoma - YotaTech Forums

    Sourcing them might be tough.

If you have a 2wd 6lug, you need a drive shaft from another 2wd truck.

Interesting... Did you use the Rockford 2540 U joints?

    I mean.. I wouldn't weld them...

The two u joints in the Cardan are different than the two. You need to get the right ones (Rockford 2540) for the Cardan. Aside from that, I can't suggest anything I would consider safe.
