Got the motor mounted to the stand late Saturday night and wanted to start tearing things down but realized I'm going to need to pressure wash it as there are some good chunks of dirt stuck to it. No visible fluid leaks though.

Also, I was speeding along the other day and a BMW X-something suv caught and slightly passed me as I laid off the gas since I was going fast enough already. At the red light I figured he was gonna go for it, so with a perfectly timed 4wd launch I was instantly a car length ahead and gaining and he couldn't catch up. Then he turned off to wherever he was probably going wondering how the hell a Tacoma got him Hahaha. It was a super fun moment.

So I installed a canbus harness for my Joying head unit to get the steering wheel controls to work better. Lost the anytime backup camera function in the process as there was no reverse switch wire in the new harness to tap into (tried a couple but the canbus doesn't seem to use the signal the same way)

Wired my Aux Efans to the machine gun switch by my cup holders, that took longer than expected but has weatherpac connectors for ease of disassembly if I need to remove the cup holders.

Installed a Diode Dynamics Smartap Led thingy. Had to remove the daytime running light module and installed a jumper block (part #82671-30360) to get it to work. Works awesome though and I really like the four flashes (user configurable) when tapping the signals for lane changes.

Not much done on motor project, it's got some serious internal varnish and sludge so I bought a cheap used varsol bath cause I'm gonna need it. Hoping the cam bearing surfaces are not trashed.

A built engine. Wow! I can only hope I make that much money someday hahahaha...

Not saying you necessarily make much money,it all comes down to what your priorities are...

    How are those gears?

Heya buddy! I bought the motor at bargain bin prices but the motor is pretty sludged. Not much money spent yet.

    It's my dirty hobby.

Oh yeah, the gears are sweet if a little wound out on the highway. Drifting is much easier now lol.

Motor project was stalled until I got a cheap Amazon tool to help loosen the crank pulley bolt. Pulled off the oil pan, timing cover, chain and tensioner, cams, etc. Broke the old vvti solonoids trying to get the out. Everything is super sludged but think it will clean up well

Now I'm stuck at removing the heads as the Allen Bolts are very tight and it seems like the heads will strip if I'm not careful. May need a different Allen socket as I have metric and strangely enough I think these are imperial (edit. Upon further research they are 10mm, which I have).

    PXL_20231013_212740879.jpg

Will change the oil in wifey's car tomorrow then maybe start soaking parts in the parts washer.

That's awesome on destroying the X-series. I wish those types of opportunities would happen to me.

Do tell about this Amazon tool you found?

I've tried three different impacts and none worked so I ordered this tool for $28 (Canadabucks). Tool attached to crank pulley and allows a breaker bar to back it up. So had my brother and me cranking on the bolt and I was also holding the breaker bar on the tool.

I was going to fab up a tool to hold the flywheel end but the tool was cheap enough.

I've removed the crank pulley bolt on my truck a couple times using the manual transmission starter bump trick and that worked great but that trick doesn't work on an engine on a stand.

OK cool! I was just thinking of using the starter bump anyways, so I'll do that.

It's a way to remove the stubbornly difficult crank pulley bolt easily with manual transmission trucks. Might be possible in automatics in neutral but I've never thought about it.

Put a breaker bar on the crank bolt and wedge it in the proper direction against the frame, pull the fuel relay and put the trans in neutral and bump the starter and it spins that bolt off in a split second of angry starter noise and your breaker bar loudly dropping on the floor.

I loosened the bolt using this method, although I tied the breaker bar to the frame with a bungee... preventing it from falling on the floor. Less noise, less exciting... but it worked well.

How do you find 1st gear with your new regear? I run out of headroom with first so fast, it's not really my favorite. And I'm at the equivalent of 3.7 gearing with my tire setup... when I regear I won't be surprised if I use first relatively not that often.

I still prefer starting in first but I run out of gearing pretty instantly if I'm heavy footed.

Pretty impressive how your front and rear have held up with your Ken Block launches. What brand gearing did you go with?
