Thanks man. You guys have been solid getting me taken care of. I am digging them so far. I have been enjoying their feel so far. I was on the fence about going with another E load tire this time around. But these feel pretty smooth. I will be happy to have them when we start to transition into our rainy, sometimes snow/ice season. My Cooper ST Pros on my 4runner are fine in the rain, but snow and ice are not their forte'.

I just ordered a set of 265/70/17 Load C through Discount Tire. The part numbers are not up on the web site, but they are available. You can message Discount tire on this forum for assistance. My tires should be in next week. Mounting them on FN FX PRO wheels, matte bronze.

I’ve had my LT255/75R17s for about 5K miles now. I like them, especially the looks and toughness but I’m not a fan of the rain traction. It’s noticeably worse than the non-LTs which I thought were very good. I have unintentionally spun out in 1st gear multiple times compared to never once doing so on the 265/65 XLs. Braking is easier to slide as well. Probably all due to the considerably less siping. Hindsight, I’d probably do 265/70R17 SL or 255/70R17 SL next time.

Sadly, I found this in one of my tires during the rotation….

    IMG_0433.jpg

Not sure what I’m doing about it yet. It went into a tread block pretty deep. No full puncture, but it concerns me for the integrity of the tire long term. Don’t want a random blowout later. I’m just driving on the full size spare for now until I figure out what discount wants to do. Didn’t buy road hazard as I’ve never had an issue before.

@BLtheP rest assured that if the tire has not lost any air, you will not have a problem in the future. At 16/32nds of tread it would have to be much longer to penetrate the liner and leak. Consider it a full depth tread sipe at this time.

Thanks. I don't know enough about tires to know how thick the carcass is under the tread blocks, I'd say about half of this piece of metal was tread block, the rest was going into the carcass. Just unsure how deep that was, so I figured I may be pretty close to puncturing the tire. But, I don't know for sure, and definitely not losing air yet.

I will add that the piece of metal was about 1-1/8" long.

Going on my 2nd set of these tires.

Thought about going back to Cooper Discoverer AT3 but those didn't wear right (I recall my brother having a similar issue on his Tacoma). My current set of Toyo's have worn great and have done well for the type of exploring I do.

About $200 price increase from my last set.:(

Do the C rated 285/70r17s have the larger shoulder and deeper treads like the LT versions? I’m reading mixed reviews as to wether or not they do.

I am not sure why but most tire companies dont put silica in LT tire sizes they just put it in Non-LT sizes and their LT sizes are much worse in wet traction because of it. Cooper Tire is the only company I know that put it is most of their LT tires.

I’ve heard that, and it seems accurate. I don’t think I’ll be doing LT again. Probably 265/70R17 SL next.

@Ilove2dubb the tread depth on both the LRC and LRE are the same. The P rated has less thread depth than the LT versions. 16.5 and 13.6

My SLs tread didn't last long after 2 years of minimal driving. Switched to another brand in LT for the added tread bepth.

Thread depth is not a great indication of tire tread life. Michelin has some extremely shallow tread depth tires that last incredibly long.

A better indication of tread life is tread wear warranty because manufacturers will have to pay you money back if your tires don’t last that long.

We’ve discussed this before, my XL tread initially wore down quickly (down to 8-9/32 in less than 10K miles but then stayed there for at least another 10k miles. Not sure how long they would have lasted.

For the road (rain and braking and such), I liked the SL/XL tread much better than LT.

It often seems that SLs have more siping over LTs of the same tire. Not sure why??

The increase in siping is why I originally went with the SL

Definitely a lot more siping in the SL tread, and the SL siping is all full depth whereas the LT stops about halfway down. That combined with the rubber compound makes these maybe better for off-road and work but not so much the street. I’m probably 95% sure I’m going back to SL next time. On my Jeep they’ll be LTs but that only sees sunny days.

I have new SL’s and they’re a lot softer than my E rated ATII’s on my Super Duty. I expect close to the mileage on the E’s but if I can get half life outta the SL’s I’ll be happy. So far the SL’s are great on wet roads and anxious to see how they do this winter. The siping on the tread blocks is different than the ATII’s as it is less linear and has angled siping for cornering so I’m interested to see how they do on ice and such. I’ve been a Toyo customer for over a going on 2 decades and this is my first set of ATIII’s. So far so good on a couple thousand miles.
