Sometimes kids are more capable than even they know. A good coach should strive to bring the best out ALL of their team.

Rule 1. Agree 100%. Sports are a great life lesson teacher. Nothing wrong with telling the truth.
Rule 2. Agree 100%. Sports aren’t fair either. The best team does not always win. The best effort and best talent does not always translate into a win.

Literally the stated goal of every sport played is to win, to beat your opponent. I am not suggesting that should not be the goal. But to place winning as the most important goal of a game ahead of how the athletes are treated is not right. You can strive to win and still respect the players as human beings. In fact, if you respect your players and treat them fairly you are more likely to win because you are more likely to get the most out of them. There should be a sliding scale for emphasis on winning. Professional sports, college sports are at the top. Varsity high school sports should see a different emphasis and even varsity sports is different than sub varsity or freshman sports. Youth sports such as junior high and younger should be more about developing the player than winning but even junior high sports will be different than 1st grade.

And I never said everyone should get a trophy. I don’t agree with that at all.

And finally, I would hope no topic here would drive you away from this thread. I don’t always agree with everyone’s opinion on all topics but for me it is ok if we don’t see eye to eye. I respect your right to have a different opinion and position. I try to listen to different opinions because I might learn something I didn’t know from you.

Agreed. Long after a young kid forgets the record of their basketball season in 5th grade they will recall if they were treated poorly by their coach.

Google pegs it at 6 hours and 12 minutes non-stop from Kittery to Madawaska.

It takes 6 hours and 15 minutes to go nonstop from Kittery to Wilmington Delaware.

My son played D1 Soccer. They played Maine and we drove up from WV, watched the game and then went all the way to Maine and Canada border for a few days. 3500 miles in 7 days lol.
My daughter played D2 soccer. We did the same thing when she played a game in Mobile, Alabama. Thank God there was only one year where they overlapped in college. We had a good time watching and traveling to see them play.
Edit: I think we stayed in Ft. Kent up north. That sounds right? It was 10 years ago lol

I coached basketball on rec and travel level up until my son figured out soccer and basketball were not complementary. Anyway, I had some single parent kids in basketball, and several teams I coached against my son as he was on a different team. Anyway, every practice, I used to introduce a word of the day. I made sure it was a word most of them were not familiar with. At the end of practice, I would give them all the new word, and randomly assign one kid, next practice, to give me the definition and another kid to use it in a sentence. If either got it wrong, the whole team had to run a suicide. If both got it wrong, they had to do two suicides. However, if both got it right, we cut conditioning short! Lol, after the first few times, you would not believe how much help the other kids gave to the kid assigned the task! Just a fun way to teach.

Huh, going west to east - Gilead to Eastport ME is just under 5 hours. Seemed like 8 when we did it many years ago.

    Good Morning everyone :hattip:

I hope you have a pleasant Sunday.

I tend to lean toward the "extremely competitive" end of the scale, I was taught to be honest and serious when perform any tasks in life; and I picked up a few things of "it is ok if we don’t see eye to eye".
This is one of the delightful to my being here. :hattip:
