I picked up a 5-burner GE Cafe cooktop from someone in Newtown who was giving it away. One of the burners didn't work, so of course my only desire was to scrap it. This was not a cheap stove when it was new!

After tearing the cooktop down, I got a decent amount of aluminum!

I always liked the GE Cafe line, but unfortunately it is no longer in production...

This is a 30" cooktop, which means it would fit in my kitchen. If all five burners were working, I would have talked my dad into installing it in our house...

For the first time in my life, Friday the 13th has brought me bad luck...

I knew this was coming, but I didn't expect it to come today.

After just over four great years at NAVMAR Applied Sciences Corporation, I was laid off today due to budget cuts. I am still an employee and if I end up going back, I will still be an employee, and I will be able to go back to work like I never left; I have been planning to apply at Home Depot, and I just applied for a temp job at the Halloween Store where I used to work so I can have gas money (and decorate the truck for Christmas) without tapping into my savings until I start at Home Depot. I have also been making money by scrapping old appliances and stuff that people are giving away on Facebook.

    Sorry to hear that bud.
I did a bit of googling and see that they provided services to the U.S. military.
It’s either feast or famine with them.

Probably didn’t help they they just had to pay out a $4.4M resolution.

    I could probably get a job a Lowe’s tomorrow.
I know where just about everything is, and probably know just as much or more than most of their employees.

    What about Costco?

Supposed to be a great company to work for, more room for growth than Home Depot or seasonal work.

American Bad Ass..big fan of Kid Rock for many years before he went country.

One of the times I saw him was 2000 and bought the American Bad Ass hat which I wore to my league games. One guy was looking at the sheet to see who his opponent was and his teammate said "uh oh you're playing the American Bad Ass!" My opponent was a much better player than me at that time but the tie breaking game (best of 3) I got right on and he didn't, then just ran down the board. He got in and I finished the next turn..he was so mad he stormed off and wouldn't shake my hand.

So, until I get my new job, I've been scrapping items I find for free on Facebook marketplace. These items have included two electric ranges, a gas cooktop, an electric minibike, three bicycles, and two brass pipes; I've made pretty decent money and there's more coming.

I was attracted to the listening below because the picture had a window A/C unit and what appears to be a microwave or toaster oven. I was under the impression that I was chatting with a younger woman, and I showed up at the house when I said that I would; I was disappointed when I found that the air-conditioner and pretty much everything else made of metal, except for a basket and two strollers, had been taken...

    It gets better!

Imagine my shock when an older Chinese couple came out of the house (actually a duplex that resembled a single-family home) and offered me money to take all of the remaining non-metal items away. Here's what happened...

The older couple owned the property and rented out the two residences. Their tenant in the upstairs unit had totally trashed the place, left all of the shit out front, and left. That tenant, a woman in her late 20s, was who I thought owned the property.

The former tenant had supposedly paid the garbage removal service, but never did, and the owners of the property were now facing a substantial fine for this shit; I felt horrible, but the only item outside that I deemed worth scrapping was the aforementioned metal basket. There was no way in hell all of that stuff would fit in my truck. Even if it did, I had no idea where to bring it.

The couple did not speak the greatest English, but as soon as I said "air-conditioner", the woman beckoned me up into 2nd floor unit; I was led to a functional, but old and absolutely disgusting, General Electric window unit that was still resting in a bedroom window. In my experience, a properly stripped down window A/C unit will bring $25-$30 combined at Sullivan's Scrap.

I know this thing was older than 2009 because it had R-22 Freon; I have torn down the unit and there is no longer anymore Freon in it.

I’ve never scraped stuff for myself.
I’ve helped other people scrape stuff.
Mostly just along for the ride and to help load the truck.

Just helped a guy clean out his shop a few weeks ago.
He got like $140 for a little over 2,000 lbs.
Most of it was cast engines and engine parts.

This woman pretty much destroyed the upstairs apartment, so badly in fact that it is basically a gut job. She took out her anger on the place for unknown reasons and among things, ripped the control panel off of an older but fully operational dishwasher, ripped off cabinets, and gouged holes in the wall; I was told that I could have the dishwasher, I have exchanged numbers with the property owner, and will be going back for it.

The kitchen also contained a no-frills Roper electric range with cool burners and a standard-clean oven. This thing had to be 20-30 years old, and I was told that I could have the stove if it was broken. Well, @Stitchgirl90 and I tried two burners and the oven. The little red lights indicating that the oven and burners were on did not come on. We did some investigation and determined that stove was in fact plugged in and nonoperational. The refrigerator was working, so the kitchen did in fact have power, and a tripped breaker was unlikely.

The stove had dead leaves in the oven, and the handle for opening the oven had been forcibly removed, but I'd seen fully operational stoves that were in much worse condition so either the psycho tenant somehow broke it or it just died due to old age. Either way, I struck a chord with the people and I get the stove as well. In my experience, an electric range is worth $10-12 at the scrapyard. They are surprisingly easy to load into the truck and there are a lot of broken ones being given away for free.

There is also a washing machine at this apartment in which the former tenant smashed the glass viewing window, which I will be allowed to take as well if it is deemed unfixable. The landlady was particularly pissed about the washer, because apparently it cost $1,400 new.

There is money on HVAC equipment; I take it more because I enjoy taking stuff apart and being able to scrap it is just a bonus. Almost a year ago, I got a combined total of like $80 for a complete central A/C system (including a gas furnace) that a guy in the next neighborhood over just gave me. The evaporator core had a leak and it was deemed more cost effective to just replace the whole unit.
