Hey, winter is coming and I want to use paint that breathes. I will be fluid filming all over the frame by myself. The truck is new and has paint obviously, but in some places its cracked, I want to coat it.

Any known good paints ? ones that will not keep moisture inside and rust from inside out?

Thanks, I know there are threads but none of them really mention paint... I am actually surprised there is no separated discussion just for rust proofing/frame related topics

POR 15 is a rust encapsulator that works great.

www.monstaliner.com has a both rust encapsulator and paint that would do what you seek.

All paint is “rust proofing”, except for maybe the water colors you used in kindergarten. Although all paint is not equal, surface preparation is also important.

The problem with paint is that there is no way to get anywhere near complete coverage (or anything approaching proper prep) on an assembled truck. Eventually rust creeps in from the edges and gets under the paint and you are worse off than before. I've tried it, it doesn't work. Now I only use "soft" coatings (Cosmoline and Fluid Film).

I think this is the product that I used before I knew better:

Yes, the truck is new and I exactly see the paint cracks on welds. It is where salt might get caught. I am planning to first paint that with Cosmos and then ill fluid film whole frame.

Just do a comprehensive job with the Cosmoline, it sets to a soft waxy coating and seals everything very well.

Don't bother with the Fluid Film, it will just make a mess in this case.

I've done Cosmoline followed the next day by Fluid Film/Woolwax on the last two new vehicles in my family. Then annual respraying with Fluid Film. I figure the Cosmoline is a backup for the Fluid Film and by spraying the truck twice I'm less likely to have missed a spot.

I just did this to my wife's brand new Rav4 and will be doing the annual respray on my truck today.

Mess? Yes. The entire underside of my truck is a greasy, grimey mess but no rust 8 years in.

After seeing what happens when you spray cosmoline over fluid flim, I'd never do it. You end up with a mess. You never want to mix the two.

Cosmoline FIRST then Fluid Film - no problem. I've done it. It works. It's not a problem. Whether or not there is any reason to do both is up for debate.
