Until ammo started getting harder to find (10 years ago or so) I was exclusively a .243 guy, as noted by the back end of my username. However until I shot a doe with my mosin nagant last year, all my rifle deer kills had still been with a .243 regardless of how difficult it was to find ammo

Hunted a .243 for over 30 years. Any failure on its part was purely because of any poor shot placement on my part. IMO the round got a bad wrap from folks using less than 100 grain bullets back in the day. These days a good .243 95 grain polymer tip load from multiple manufacturers are all lethal loads. It is indeed a necked down .308 cartridge. I refurbished the Rem 700 a few years ago that I got when I was 16 in 1986 for Christmas. Refinished, floated the barrel and bedded the stock. Had a cheapo factory plastic stock on it for a good many years prior. I still tote it several times a season.

I dont gun hunt (for deer) much anymore but .243 has always been my favorite caliber. My dad gave me this one 25 years ago and its always been my favorite gun. Remington 600

My FIL had a 600 in .308. Had the light/dark stock. Didn't care much for the appearence, but that gun was a shooter. Sub MOA at 300 yards if I did my part.

My older brother has my dad's (deceased) model 88 Winchester in 308. Great gun, but wasn't real popular since it was lever action and didn't seem to sell well except in Pa. back in the '60s as other states allowed semi autos and Pa. didn't. Tried to get it from him for either my son or daughter, but he said no - he doesn't hunt, so it is probably rusting away somewhere in his house. His one son does hunt, but not with that gun.

Those Mohawks had safety issues. Were part of the recall. My uncle had one and it fired when he took the safety off to unload it in the seat of his truck after an evening hunt by himself. Put a nice bullet hole in the passenger door. My Dad's rifle (one I mentioned earlier) went off in a similar manner as he unloaded the gun with it pointed at the ground with his truck's driver door open. Was using the interior light to see what he was doing. The bad part is my friend and I were already sitting in the truck. When the dust settled in the truck our ears were ringing for a good while and there was a foot wide hole in the red clay roadbed. Thank God no one was hurt in either event. Both thought they had inadvertently pulled the triggers when knocking the safety off till they heard later that there was an issue, recall, and sent the guns back to remington for replacement. The new safety allowed the gun to be unloaded with it on. Long story but felt compelled to share it. You don't see those old Mohawk 600s much. Weren't very popular when they were made back in the 70s as I understand things.

And deer season is kicking my butt. Had Covid for the third time two weeks ago. Got over that and was able to go to the low state for a draw hunt this past weekend. It rained every stinking day. Sat in the Savannah river bottom hardwood sloughs. Saw some deer and glimpsed one good shooter pushing a doe at 90 yards but never a shot other than a doe. Was tough to not be able to hear a thing moving. Came home with a coating of swamp mud on everything. At least I got all that gear cleaned up.

Funny you mention that because it reminded me....

My dad had a 700 that you had to take the safety off to unload...he was in a truck and had the barrel resting on the toe of his boot (and he was prolly 2/3 drunk) and it fired and went thru his boot and a front passenger tire, never got his toe tho. He immediately came home and fixed that gun himself. The 600 that I have; not sure if he got it already fixed or if he did it himself, but you absolutely do not have to take the safety off of it.
Thanks for the reminder and the memories!!

I have a Big Game brand and a Muddy in my Amazon cart right now . The stand I mostly rifle hunt from is just getting old . It’s a metal flip up seat with no back . I bring a cushion but the tree prevents me from leaning back and getting comfortable. I like to be minimum 18-20’ up .

Well, knocked my first bow-hunt out this weekend. Saw some squirrels and heard a deer blowing in the distance, but thats about as eventful as it was. Maybe next time! On the plus side, got some work done on the land, planted a greenfield, cut in some trails, hung some ladder stands, and started milling some lumber for a new shooting house!
