I let mine heat up the house for a little bit Saturday evening. All the rain made it super damp feeling in the house. It was 63° in the house, let it warm up to 66° and turned it off. Changed the oil filter yesterday and everything was somehow super clean. Unfortunately the tank is developing some rust underneath. Not sure if I want to convert the boiler to propane (rural area, no natural) or just replace the tank. Will be monitoring very closely...

Managed to hold off so far on the furnace. Did start our natural gas fireplace and that's enough for now to take out some of the chill in the house. I went on the budget plan for the gas bill years ago. Definitely glad that I made that decision.

 

I need some gas logs. That would be nice. Just need an insert, I have a tap in basement and of course electric. Maybe leaning towards non vented. Anyone have non vented? CO issues ?

I have had a non vented propane fireplace since 2000, when we remodeled our family room. I have had no problems with CO2 emissions, as I have CO2 detectors throughout the house - including on just a few feet from the fireplace. I did have to replace the insert in March. I used a guy from Bethel Park who was knowledgeable and fair priced.

 

Was he a plumber or did he hustle the logs ? I need someone to smarten me up if that's possible. I would think the non vented setup would be an easier install. Plus my first floor is all open , tall ceilings .

 

He services them. If I recall, he had a store, had closed it and still had some stock left. This was in March.

Mine is the vent free type. It has a built in sensor to detect low Oxygen levels and will shut off if that happens. I also installed new smoke detectors throughout my house with smoke and Carbon monoxide detection. The insert and gas logs I've had for close to 10 years and the only issue we have is the bathroom mirror closest to the fireplace gets a haze on the mirror and needs cleaned more often and the plants she has in that room need watered more often. Beyond that it actually lowered my gas usage slightly and my furnace doesn't run as often when the fireplace is running.
Last several years I've turned it on sometime in October and don't shut it back off until late March or early April. It has a built in thermostat so I just run it on a low setting as needed but can easily crank it up if it's really cold. Best thing about it is no electricity required so even in a power outage I can have heat.

 

Back to the grind.

 

We have no gas lines out here. We use mostly electric, although my heating source incudes propane. With the last increase in electricity costs I haven't seen many bills under $300. I just got notice for last month's and it is under $300, the first time since May.
