Saw a video one time. It was a compilation of security and cell phone cameras of real life events (mostly Brazil I think - strange but OK). It was incidents where someone held up a gas station or tried to grab a kid and some rando-concealed-carryer struggled to chamber a round and lost. Usually because he had something in the other hand, like his kid, and was struggling with the choice of letting go of the kid to chamber the round and then having to shoot towards your kid.

Not only will you not have time but when the adrenaline immediately starts flowing and your mind has turned to mush, you quite possibly won’t remember to rack the slide. You’ll just point and pull the trigger and nothing will happen. Then when you realize you have to rack the slide the next sound you won’t hear will be the bad guys gun going bang.

The loudest noise and maybe the last noise you ever hear is the sound of the "click" on an empty chamber :annoyed:

I have never understood the people that try to argue against carrying in a ready state. If you aren't confident enough in your skills and safe handling procedures you shouldn't be carrying at all.

Especially because most of the current popular carry guns are striker fired with a half decent safety.

Imagine these same people carrying a 1911 locked and cocked with a trigger so fine you can press it with a fart. Rather, imagine the draw if anything was to go down.

I have always said the two loudest sounds in the world are a bang when you expected a click and a click when you expected a bang!

I think it comes from old western logic where they carried a six-shooter but left one chamber empty and the hammer down on that empty chamber.
Made sense at the time because the hammer would rest directly on the black powder percussion cap and there's lots of stuff to bump it when you are doing cowboy stuff.

Then when we got into metallic cartridges, the early revolvers would have a hammer spur on them that rested on the cartridge primer, so it was still prudent to carry hammer down on an empty chamber. In both examples, merely pulling the trigger rotated the cylinder and advanced the next round so there was no "extra" steps or motions. Now we use a transfer bar that falls when the trigger is not pulled so there is never any direct hammer to cartridge contact.

Eventually we moved to semi-automatic pistols. Early semi-auto's rested a hammer on a firing pin that rested on a primer. And in some early military adoptions protocol was to carry on an empty when you were behind lines to avoid any ND in the barracks, chow lines, or tactical planning sessions. Then when you went to the front line you would chamber a round. Mind you this is early 1900's.

Now almost all semi-auto pistols are built with a trigger safety, firing pin block, firing pin spring that keeps the pin back, rebounding hammers, a grip safety and some pistols have two or more of these features.

The major difference between the Colt 1911 70 Series and 80 Series was the addition of the firing pin block in the 80. So you had the manual safety, the grip safety, and a pin block that wouldn't let the firing pin move unless the trigger was pulled. This is also why a lot of people preferred the crisper shorter trigger pull of the 70 Series for target and competition shooting.

But in today's world with modern manufacturing and high strength metallurgy, the safeties designed and built into our pistols negate the need to carry with an empty chamber.*

*Note - Glocks still skeeze me out because I know of at least THREE women with a Glock rolling around in their purse that do NOT have the trigger covered. That's a whole nuther conversation though.

I inherited a sh*t ton of firearms from my father in law. Army veteran who went on to work for JPL. Had access to tons of military surplus,a nd he was an avid target shooter. Here are some of my favorites.

That’s a great collection to take over. What are the details on the Mauser (?) target rifle with the Unertl style scope? Absolutely beautiful!

you speaking about my post? I don’t see any issue, no different than posting a picture of a license plate on your car. If you’ve acquired the firearm legally there shouldn’t be any issue.

I don’t worry about it much either. There’s about 10,000 visible serial numbers on Gun Broker.
