On the freeway I seem to get a pinging sound. Sounds almost like a chain rattle but I guess it's pinging. I can watch the afr lean out. Got half way to work before it started happening. Was happening around 2k rpm going up hills. Just seeing what others have done to fix their pinging. FYI supercharged.

Put fresh 93 in it and it seems to help a lot. Going to try some vp racing octane booster and see if the problem gets better.

    Running lean can definitely impact

You should not have to run high octane, but if the sounds goes away because of it then that's a great way to confirm that there is an issue.

I'm a bone head. I forgot to mention it has a second gen supercharger on it.

Ah, well then yes you are pinging, and yes running lean is probably why if it hasn't always done this. Do you have ECU management? How lean are we talking?

No stock ecu. I just put the kit on and I noticed today. I've seen 15 or 16 to 1. I wonder if something is up with my fpr. I do have a boost gauge teed into it. Wonder if that's causing me problems.

Yikes. Are you in boost when it pings?

It usually pings around 0 boost. The pinging has gotten a lot better with fresh gas. The leanout still scares me though. Tomorrow I will look over the fpr and vacuum lines. I feel if I fix that my pinging will get better too.

Update. Installed new maf and added some vp racing octane booster. Still get occasional pinging but runs much better no leaning out. Pinging could be partially caused by heavy 33s with no gearing.

Ultimately you need to find a way to retard ignition timing. Higher octane fuel does help, but if there isn't enough of it then it can't help. Typically the stock computer targets 14.7 to 1 afr in all situations except Wot. This isn't good for a boosted engine. It is also running a NA timing map and can't pull enough timing when knock is detected since the factory map wasn't intended to go that low.

Yes the knock sensors aren't active until 3k rpm. I have noticed the pinging isn't a problem until I get heat soak. I think methanal may be a solution. Yes, ultimately the right solution is to run a standalone and get it tuned. Monitering afrs and once in boost it does go rich. I see mid-12s. The computer can pull lots of timing up to 20-something degrees. The problem is I only get pinging around 2k rpm. Knock sensors aren't used until 3k rpm. I think running some water meth and running the right gears should be the fix.

You might consider the 7th injector kit. Pulls timing, adds fuel, no extra resivours to monitor/refill. Easy and works.
