Axle or hub

    2010 Tacoma. 4 cyl access cab.
    When driving straight or turning to the left a loud humming is present. When I turn the steering wheel to the left it stops. Even when I'm at 12 o'clock on the wheel, turn it to 11 it will stop.
    No thumping, or clanking or metal sounding at all. Raided it up checked the two front axles. Pass side has very minimal play up and down, or in and out. Drivers side has quite a bit of play up and down, but not much in and out.
    Thinking its the axle on drivers side, but really don't know, just wanted to check with you guys.

    Sounds more like a wheel bearing... could be the axel or differential.
    My money is on a wheel bearing. ;)

    Sounds like a wheel bearing to me too.
    But your statement contradicts its self.
    “Driving straight and turn left it makes a noise”.
    The you say, turn the wheel from 12 o’clock to 11 o’clock it “stops”.
    12 to 11 is turning left…….

    Humming or light grinding from my experience is almost always a wheel bearing rather than an axle, especially when it goes away/gets worse when unloading/loading that side of the vehicle. I've found axles usually make click/clunks/pops etc at slow speeds when turning and binding, or a vibration at speed-usually when accelerating.

    That is happening right now on my passenger side.
    Wheel bearing! But my policy is one goes the other may go too. So I am
    Changing out both, axel and bearing/hun assembly

    Ok, thanks everybody. I meant that it makes the humming noise going straight and turning right. But not going to the left.

    When you jacked the front up to check for play, how did you do it? What do you mean by 'play up and down'?

    The typical test is the grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and do a push/pull test in/out to see if the wheel bearing has any play at all. If you actually have up/down movement of the wheel in the wheel well you may have other issues.

    edit: tacos typically pass the push/pull test even with bad bearings. typically noise is the first and best signal

    Lol I had to stop and think for a second, make sure I wasn't loosing my mind and forgetting left from right.

    mine went after 5k miles of noises when doing Nascar turns before I could feel it loose in my hands

    If you feel movement at the tire, it’s toast. It’s been bad for awhile at thy point.
    I have better luck grabbing the tie rod and feeling for it by spinning the wheel.
    Some guys say to jack the front wheel up under the control arm to put the load back on the suspension and straight the axle angles back out. But you can still feel it either way. You can feel it better if you Jack the control arm up, but I usually don’t.
